Great camera, lots of custom features and the closest you can get to dslr wthout going there. If your more into photography I would recommend getting an older Canon 10D for dslr and lens changing.
Anything above ISO 200 gets noise everywhere, but the large adjustments in shutter speed and aperture can allow you to constanly shoot in ISO 80 in very low light conditions.
For point and shoot users, this is b far the best point and shoot camera. Takes amazing portraits.
GET RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES. Before I did I would go through sets of them in a matter of minuets no joke.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, durable
Cons: Complicated controls/menu, Heavy/Bulky, Short battery life
I would recommend this to a friend!

Never Again

I bought my camera in 2007. I was the greatest thing ever, I loved it and so did my friends. It lasted me about 3 years before it started acting up. Now 3 years is a good amount of time, but for what I paid for it, is should have lasted me through college and beyond, not just a third of high school. The feature I loved most was the swivel lcd screen, because it made taking pictures of my friends and I easy. But around christmas last year, when it would power on, the screen went gray. But when I swiveled it out to the side, it worked perfectly. About 2 months after that, I couldn't even swivel it out anymore because the screen showed gray and nothing more. There's only a certin spot that you have to hold the lcd screen for it to work, which makes taking photos a pain. Now I hate the camera and don't use it. It sits on a shelf collecting dust because no photography place fixes cameras anymore. I'm highly disappointed and will be calling the company soon to see what they'd like to do about it.
Additional comments: It has a great zoom, I am impressed by that. The battery life is horrible! Photo quality great in the daytime, not so much at night.
Pros: great zoom
Cons: very slow recharge between flashes, horrible battery life, Poor Low-Light Performance, flimsy lens cover
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Zoom far surpasses any I've used, quality is perfect on any size setting (have even converted a picture into a 5ft tall life size cut out). You can let your creativity flow with all of the built in features.
I would recommend this to a friend!

when i bought my camera i was looking to take some o.k. pictures. but when i started to use and learned how to use it . i found it to be a excellent camera. it made taking pictures fun and easy. the only bad thing is low lighting inside a house can cause a few problems until you get the right setting. just like anything you got to see what works with different circumstances and remember what you did to make it work. i would recommend this camera to anybody who wants to take good pictures without a lot troubles and to have a great time doing it
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Control Confusion
on November 30, 2008

This camera has great quality pictures, but with a price. The controls of this camera are so confusing and irritating, if you have not used it before you have no hope of controlling it. Both the megapixels and the optical zoom are just slightly better than its cousin, the PowerShot SX100 IS. The controls are almost ridiculously hard for simple tasks such as home videos or manual photo setup. Another problem is that it takes four batteries in comparison to the two most others need. I would recommend the SX100 IS to anyone who prefers simple controls and easy-to-learn functions. The S5 IS I recommend to the more serious photographer with a smaller budget. Overall, I give it 3/5.
Pros: Bright LCD, excellent image quality, good battery life, durable

Movie Mode doesn't synch sound

The PowerShot S5 IS is slow but takes nice pictures.
A major complaint though is that the sound doesn't sychronize with the video. This is a major problem and I am dissapointed that Canon hasn't released a firmware upgrade to fix this.
Pros: Nice features/settings, good battery life
Cons: Missing features/settings
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Had this camera for a year. Overall pretty frustrating. Autofocus is a problem. Terrible in low light and overall it is poor compared to an A520 I have. Also, when using the flash, the pictures are not as good compred to the A520. Very bright deer in the headlights effect. Nice things about the camera are the video mode which produces high quality video for up to 30 minutes. Also the hotshoe is great and I use a bounce flash. Unfortunately, I don't have the expensive Canon flash so I have to adjust manually the exposure, but you get the hang of it. ISO above 200 is poor and not worth using.
Pros: Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, flash hotshoe, video is high quality
