Excellent

Purchased this camera to take on Safari in Southern Africa (Botswana, Namibia & Zambia). I wanted some of the features of a SLR camera without the weight and bulk of one. This thing worked like a champ. The image stablizer worked so well that I was able to take pictures using the digital zoom while riding in the back of a moving Range Rover. Movies I took with this were more than good enough and the camera performance was great. Only recomemdation I have is to make sure that you use a fast speed memory card if you are going to go with a SD card bigger than 1 GB.

Camera's fine, but awkward

i had an S2 IS which was the best camera i've ever had. i thought i was upgrading when i got the S5 IS, but now, not so much. The images it takes and the software features are fine, but it has several annoying inconveniences, mainly: the lenscap won't stay on, and the SD card is located on the bottom in the battery chamber. To change cards, i have to remove my tripod foot and more than once i've accidentally dumped out the batteries while changing cards. And i've got a chip in my lens due the the lenscap not staying on.
Pros: nice resolution, good features
Cons: lenscap won't stay on, sd card slot is on bottom in the battery chamber
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Very Nice Camera

Purchased this one as soon as it was offered. I have several Canon camera models and this is one of the nicest. Weight is OK, would be better if the neck strap was wider at the neck. Using digital batteries I get near 200-shots per set (no flash). Lense cap fits loose enough to be pushed off when it is forgotten, as the camera is turned on, which is good more often than not. I printed off the manual so I could mark it up as needed for references, larger print makes it easier to find references. For those of you that like to read negatives. The accesories seem to be a bit high priced (tele lens, Wide lens), and it is a hassel to change back and forth as well as changing the setting in the menu to correspond to the lens being used.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

Thought I'd prefer EOS

I bought a PowerShot S5 IS as a compromise, thinking I'd prefer an EOS but not willing to spend the extra money. It arrived just before I left on a trip to England. I read the instructions on the plane. The first day of using it I took two shots that have since won awards! I love the image stabilizer and the fact that it takes AA batteries. I only had to change the batteries once in the entire month of photography while I was in England (I did use special batteries for digital equipment). I loaned that camera to my brother and bought an EOS Rebel for my trip to Europe this year. I'm not exactly disappointed in the new camera, but I really prefer my PowerShot. The EOS has a special rechargeable battery that gave up on me in Italy. When I got back to my hotel room I could recharge it, but with the PowerShot I could have bought AA batteries and kept shooting. I prefer the tilt-out screen of the PowerShot as well, and its zoom lens seems to have less distortion than the standard 18-55 mm zoom on the EOS. It's the PowerShot for me in the future.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, aa batteries
Cons: Complicated controls/menu

Love this camera!

I have had this camera for two years now and it is just simply amazing. I have taken pictures on the beach in the rain in the snow in the dark everywhere my family goes this camera goes. It has some great features and it didn't take me long to figure out how to use them all. I love the fact that when we go to the beach I can capture the blue in the ocean and leave the rest b&w it has made for some amazing pictures of my kids. I have even taken pictures in the dark and with the flash they come out clear as day. I can say i have taken over 5000 pictures with this camera and I haven't had a problem with it. We also love the video feature on it. It works well and the sound and picture is clear. I did get rechargeable batteries for it and they usually last about two months before I need to recharge them. All around great camera I highly reccomend it.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance

An excellent 8 MP camera

The 8 MP resolution of the S5 IS will allow you to take vivid true to life color pictures in all types of lighting. The auto mode works well for most situations, but the program mode allows you more flexibility. While the 12x zoom is not an improvement over the S3 it does a decent job in this camera. The built in flash is powerful and the hot shoe makes it possible to use it with a detachable flash. The images are sharp on glossy photo paper.
One design flaw is the battery compartment where the memory card is stored. The batteries fall out unless you remember to flip the camera over.
The included software is first rate and the camera interfaces with my computer without any problems every time. The size is right for a person with large hands.
This camera is an excellent value for the photographer who wants DSLR quality photos, at a reduced cost.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: battery compartment/memory card slot.

Gem Of A Camera!
on July 17, 2009

Bought this camera over a year ago for many reasons: it uses AA batteries, long zoom, tight macro, manual control and portability. I wanted a camera with lens flexibility so that I didn't have to lug along the extra lenses that are needed with an SLR. I took this camera, exclusively, with me on a Caribbean Cruise and a trip to Puerto Rico. This camera does it all! You should spend some time learning it"s full capabilities, because it does so much more than simply shoot on Auto, unless, of course, that is all you want from it.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

Great Camera

I have had my S5IS for about 11 months now and I love it. It is so easy to use. My pictures are crystal clear. This camera has a lot of "bells and whistles" that I have not even tried yet, but even an amateur like me can take great photos just using the "Auto" setting. I love the fact that it has both a view finder and the LCD monitor. I like the fact that the monitor is such a good size and that it "swivels". All in all this is a great camera and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, good battery life, durable
Cons: Heavy or bulky
