Awesome Camera

The PowerShot S5 IS is my first digital camera and I love it. It has features that you find on pro-cameras and quality like no other. I shoot everyday with it and have never had a problem. The zoom is awesome, clear, and fast. The battery life is... great. I can get about 700 images, half with flash, before I need to replace the batteries. One more thing, the software that comes with it is so cool and very useful. I highly recommend it to anybody wanting a camera that is better than just a "point-and-shoot" but not as expensive as a DSLR.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, great users guide, sd/sdhc compatible
Cons: lens cap falls of too easy
I would recommend this to a friend!

Nice camera but quirky at close range

Having got fed up lugging round a bag full of SLR bits, I selected this camera to shove in my pocket. It takes great scenic photos, though it lacks a decent wide angle, and the zoom range is superb. It fits my biggish hands comfortably and all the main controls are easily got at with your right index finger and thumb. The swivel viewing screen is tremendous for overhead or down by your knees shots as well as for photographing documents on a flat surface. Image quality is reasonable until you get within a couple of feet when the edges of photos take on a very distinct curve and image sharpness is very variable, often requiring that your photos need to be sharpened or even retaken. I have also seen significant purple fringing on scenic photos. Battery life is good - I use regular old rechargeables and get a few hundred non-flash pictures on each set. The camera fits easily in a jacket pocket although the lens cap does tend to fall off in your pocket - the upside of this is that you can turn it on and the lens cap pops off. It connects easily to a PC through USB and photos download very quickly - I'd be happier if it would power down after being attached to the PC for a while but no camera seems to do that. As is always the case with digital cameras, the accompanying software is not very good but there are, fortunately, a number of freebies out there that make it unnecessary beyond helping you download pictures to your PC. All round, I am happy with this camera but I do wish its close-ups were not so inclined to be out of focus.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: poor software

I love it, i got it for my birthday and use it for everything. The zoom is great, i can video tape my son's track meet from the other side of the track. Easy to use, and uploading is a breeze, especially with a mac. Its a very good camera. My son's school photographer has this camera and he just put a flash on top of the camera, i definitely recommend this.
Cons: Missing features/settings, Short battery life

Excellent Camera for amateur photography
on November 27, 2008

This camera is an excellent camera to get if you are an amateur photographer like I am as well as a professional. This camera works well with the extra lenses you can buy to use with it as well as the extra flash attachment that can be attached to the Hotshot on it. I have been able to take some great shots at concerts, weddings, local events, outdoors, everyday photos and more. Plus with the fast speed from shot to shot I am able to catch the things I wouldn't at a much more productive time then my other cameras just like what I am able to do with my regular 35 mm camera.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, excellent fast action photos
I would recommend this to a friend!

I shopped for months, set out to purchase another brand. Spent the extra money because of the zoom.
I did have to send it in for battery repairs, but Canon has great customer service and I had it back before they said I would.
I will say it has more features than I know how to use. But I am learning.
I also purchased the Canon printer and am pleased with the quality of the photos.
I moved up from one of the early early digial camers.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
Cons: Complicated controls/menu
I would recommend this to a friend!

fabulous camera

I purchased this camera in 2007 and have rec'd only compliments about the quality picture it takes. It amazes me that I can line my pictures up to those taken with other "professional" cameras and you can't tell the difference. The camera is very easy to use. The only difficulty I had was using it in a very cold climate...I had to keep putting it inside my clothing to warm it up so that I could get that next shot.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, good battery life
