I am strictly an amateur when it comes to photography. But this camera makes me look like I have some experience. I bought it in March for a trip to the west coast. Before I knew it, I had taken over 800 pictures and hardly deleted any of them! ( I bought a larger memory card as well).
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, portable, good battery life, durable
Cons: Dim LCD, lens cap comes off easily.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I bought the S5IS right before the S10Is came out. By far the most sophisticated point and shoot camera. It's EZ to just point and shoot.
Some people complain about the lens cap not staying on. BUT it needs to come off easily because most people forget to take it off before they turn the camera on.
Some people say it's bulky. I have a problem dropping small cameras so I like the larger size for my larger hands.
Battery life is OK. I use Sanyo Eneloop. They work just fine.
The only problem I have had so far is the macro lens which I use a lot. On AUTO setting the closest you can get to a subject is about 4". You CAN'T use SUPER MACRO on AUTO. You have to go to M or P mode to shoot. Maybe they fixed it with the S10. Other than that I love this camera.
One more thing about Canon besides the superb quality. They have the fastest, easiest and most friendly customer service in the world.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, durable

Great Camera

I've had this camera for Almost a year now (June 09 will make it a year) Best Camera I've ever owned! I upgraded to this from a VIVICAM and I have no regrets about buying it. Most of the pictures I take are of my Birds My old camera never showed their true colors, 1st picture I took of one of my violet Budgie Parakeets came out Violet Instead of Sky blue and I was sold! Never looked back, I also LOVE the fact that when taking Video I can zoom in during video taking THIS i wish I would of bought sooner because I would of had a much better Video of my daughters 5th grade graduation! I never read the manual, I'm more of a hands on person, I figured out the basic's quickly and I'm still learning the rest, But for what I use it for The basics are great. And I know once I figure out all the other features it'll be even better.
The only thing I didn't like was it drained my batteries fairly quickly, and I was using Name brand batteries, BUT when I switched to name brand rechargeable batteries it didn't drain those so quickly So that's not even an Issue any more.
I'd like for it to be a little more light weight and less bulky BUT I'll deal with that because it takes the best pictures I've ever taken I've taken pictures of a hawk That was out side my window - took it from inside my house through the window and it looks like i'm standing right beside the hawk and you can't tell the picture was taken through the window!
The Memory card location doesn't bother me at all (its in the same place as my other camera was)
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, durable, takes actual true color shots
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

I am very happy with the camera and is easy to use. The only fault at this time is that the lense cap comes off to easy when putting it away in a gadget bag. I wish it could be mounted more permant and not so easy to come off.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
Cons: lense cap will not stay on.

Prefect Pre-SLR Camera

This is my second camera and I am pretty pleased with it. I like the fact the I can customize the color in the image, in addition that it has 12x zoom, that I good because I take pictures from far away a lot of times. I would of really been pleased with this camera if it had underwater capability and if it had more special scene features like kids and pets and sunset. The most important thing I would greatly appreciate would be a a higher frames per second rate so better sports photos can be taken for people that can't afford an SLR camera.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, color accent/swap, good zoom, additional lens attachment
Cons: Missing features/settings, Short battery life, no underwater capability, low fps rate

I love this camera

It takes terrific pics. It has features I like so much, like the rotating LCD (for framing pics in a crowd or over the heads of the people in front of me in a crowd, or artsy low-angle shots without having to lie on the floor). It's a bit bulkier for using AA batteries, but on trips away from civilization (1 week Grand Canyon trip, or Burning Man) it's great not to have to worry about those hyper-expensive dedicated batteries. I haven't found both of these features on an SLR, and just don't want to give them up. The IS gives me 1-2 addt'l functional f-stops for low-light photography. Only 2 things I would change. Sometimes when cropping, I wish I weren't starting with a .jpg. I have a suspicion Canon took out RAW to try to shift people toward their SLR's. And, yes, I'd like a few more megapixels (10-12), when I'm cropping.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, uses aa batteries, rotating lcd for framing in a crowd
Cons: no raw option.

Like the Canon Powershot S5IS a lot!

The Canon (digital) Powershot S5IS is a really good buy for the money you pay. The quality of the photo's is great and the color is very clear. However, the batteries seem to die a bit quickly but you can prolong their life by reviewing your pictures on the computer instead of viewing them through the camera screen. I also enjoy being able to take video with this camera. Overall, I highly recommend this camera.

Great Product For The $$$$$

The articulating LCD screen is great for over the crowd shots, as well as some unique (from the ground up) flower shots. The "Start/Stop" button for "Video" mode is awkward when hand holding the camera. Produces great video and sound. Control buttons on the camera back can be cumbersome for those users with big hands/fingers. Use of an external flash helps greatly in low light situations. (Better than built in flash.)
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance
