I took this lens on vacation with me and with one exception of wanting to get tight on on a pitcher at Busch Stadium this lens never came off my 50D! It went from the Arch to Busch stadium to some fountains outside my hotel and fountains at union center! i love this lens my best purchase (other than my camera!)
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus
I would recommend this to a friend!

Terrible Lens

This is my first L series lense and I am very diappointed. I'm using this Lens with the Canon 60D camera and the image quality is inferior to my cheaper lenses and there doesn't appear to be an answer. There are many reviews that reference "soft images" and I should have listen to the complaints before buying this lens. The camera just doesnt focus sharply under most condictions. Sometimes it's very slight and other times very noticable. If you like crisp, sharp vibrant images you will be very disappointed with this lens.
Pros: nice color
Cons: soft images, very heavy
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It is difficult to chose a favorite lense, however, I use the 24-70 f/2.8 with a 1D-Mark III. With my 30D, I prefer the EF-S 17-55 IS f/2.8. In photographing high contrast object, I probably would chose the 1D-Mark III with the 24-70. Both lenses are great.
Pros: fast, weather sealed, includes lense hood
Cons: heavy, no stabilization, expensive
I would recommend this to a friend!

Look at another lens for pro lens

I thought this would be my favorite lens. I should have tested this lens to make sure it was sharp from 24 to 70. I have used it on a interior architecture job and used the 24mm to 30mm most of the time. the images were not sharp. thought it was me, since then I have done a test and found the 70mm sharp, but at the wider end it failed every test I did. I like canon products and customer service. The lens is built well, fast zoom, but would not consider a pro len. I will have to let this lens go, but I love my 70-200 2.8 IS lens.
Pros: Superior build quality
Cons: Semi-sharp images
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Don't know what is up but this lense is very dissapointing. After haveing it for two years with little use I finally put it through it's paces in Ireland. Most of my images are soft especially at the edges. Even stopped down to medium apertures the softness is noticable. A tripod was used and made no difference.
Cons: soft
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Excellent All-To-Do Lens

Got it in 2007 and so far making my living out of it. (Of course I own other Canon "L" lens as well)
Love the quality of the images and its easy focusing.
Dropped it more than 6 times and still performing like new!
Good lens for the beginner and those everyday all-to do projects.
Fit perfectly every where and gives you a decent range of action.
If you are a pro you'd like to have it as part of your arsenal.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality
Cons: Slow auto-focus
I would recommend this to a friend!

You will be sorry if you purchase this lens. it needs "IS" !
performs very poor !!!!!!!
very heavy as one will need a tri-pod to get some what good results. whats sad here ...., is, canon makes nothing better than this in the normal zoom lens.
Cons: way over priced
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I also found that this lens is really not that sharp opened wide, but it is still very nice overall. My wife was watching the documentary "The September Issue" and I saw that Mario Testino was using this lens (I think) to shoot some of the pictures for the Vogue September 2007 issue. Someone like him probably can buy much nicer or more expensive lens, and he must be using this for a reason. I shoot mostly birds so I only use this for family gatherings a few times a year and it does the job.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality
Cons: Semi-sharp images
I would recommend this to a friend!
