I own both the 24-70 and 70-200 and they simply work great. Don't settle for off brands if you plan on shooting pro or semi-pro.

Disappointed

Canon replaced this lens under warranty - still - I cant seem to find the sweet spot for image quality. I compare it with my 100-400 L and it is greatly less sharp. That lens is stellar! Somehow, for the price, it should be better (Camera is a 50D so the lack of sharpness isn't a camera problem. I shot mostly on a tripod, so it isn't camera shake either - I have run RAW tests and just can't find an F stop where the lens really excells. I have used SLRs for 35 years, so it is likely not anything I am doing. Net net this lens disappoints
Pros: Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, macro features, good in poor light
Cons: Semi-sharp images, just one. image

I finally upgraded to the 60D and bought new lenses. the 24-70 f/2.8L USM is AMAZING. GREAT quality shots, focus, speed, and feel. ONLY downfall is its weight. This thing is HEAVY. I work out 4 days a week and after carrying it around all afternoon this lense has made my hands sore.
Cons: heavy heavy heavy, it's too heavy

EL 24-70 is a great lens, though it's not as sharp as f/4 L series lenses like the 24-105 or 70-200 f/4, I am guessing this is because of it's speed and higher color quality. Also IS would be great but that didn't stop me buying it a year ago because of it's focal length. At 24-70 "IS" is no big deal. By looking at the pricing between the IS and non IS identical lenses, this lens should be a little bit cheaper though considering it's limiting focal length coverage and no IS.
Pros: Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus

Great zoom lens with some limitations

A lot of people dog this lens for not being sharp. In fact this lens has a fair amount of CA and if you correct for that it will look a good deal sharper. If your shots look misfocused at 24mm try CA correction.
Contrast and sharpness not all that great at 2.8 especially near edges. Considerable vignetting also. It cleans up pretty quickly though. I've not found a zoom that performs well at the largest apertures at short focal lengths; if you need this get a 35mm f/1.4 they are unbeatable.
AF was good for this kind of lens but nothing special.
It's kind of a heavy and fat lens, but it has the advantage that it takes the place of a couple of lenses if you don't need crisp and really fast.
For what kind of lens it is, it is a well done design.
Pros: Superior build quality, low flare, good color, nice contrast
Cons: Semi-sharp images, more than average ca

The 24-70 2.8 was one of my first, if not the first, lens purchases for my 40D. The pictures came out somewhat sharp, not tack sharp, and the camera needed to crank the ISO's up to get the shutter speed I needed. ( no IS!!! ) BTW, I am now using a 7D.
Subsequent purchases were the 70-200 2.8 IS and the 16-35 2.8. Both of these lenses need much less light than the 24-70, and both turn in superior quality pictures. Either I have a lense that for some reason is not calibrated, or the lens itself is a turkey. I hate it, and will not use it. The concept is good, 24-70 2.8 should be my carry lens, but my outcome every time is just mediocre. I have been advised to buy the new F4L zoom, I think it is IS and 24 to 104? Not sure.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality
Cons: Semi-sharp images, needs more iso than a 2.8 should
