Back Focus Problems

I use this lens on a full sensor 5d Mark ii. This is a very versatile lens. It has wonderful color production and is very sharp in manual mode. The auto focus feature back focuses constantly! This is a common thing i have found in many other reviews of this lens. My zoom wheel is also extremely difficult to turn from 24-40mm range.
Pros: Superior build quality
Cons: Slow auto-focus, back focus
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Just Something About the Sharpness
on January 31, 2011

I've had this lens for 2 years now. Overall, it's OK and I've had some good shots, but there is just something about the sharpness of the image that doesn't sit well with me. Whether it's the actual lens, or the autofocus, i don't know, but compared to the 70-200L F4 and the unbelievable 85L f1.2, my photos just don't seem to be at the 'sharpness" level I expect from an "L" lens. It's hard to put my finger on, but many others in these reviews seem to indicate a similar issue by listing "semi-sharp" as a con. Therefore, for the price, I have to vote "no" to recommend.
Pros: Superior build quality
Cons: Semi-sharp images, weight
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Has Potential, Focusing Issue

I notice a lot of reviews on this lens mentioning soft images. This lens is tack sharp if it's focused properly, but since I purchased this lens It has had a back-focusing problem. Not sure why it happens but when at any focal length under 70mm the auto focus will be off significantly causing a blurry image. Zooming in to 70mm before taking the photo and focusing ensures a crisp image every time. This is annoying to do on every picture and has caused me to use this lens less than my others.
Considering there is a work-around I gave this lens a decent rating. I just wish for $1400 the thing would have been perfect out of the box like all my other Canon lenses are. Now I will have to send the lens in for repairs and come even more out of my pocket.
Pros: vibrant colors, usable range, heavy duty build
Cons: quality issues, back focusing problem, heavy weight, soft images
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Lens

I started with a rebel xsi with an EF-S 18-55mm and a EF-S 55-250mm 4-5.6. That worked well for my first 8 months of shooting. I then bought the 50D and a 50mm 1.4 EF lens. It worked great but I wanted somthing even sharper. I saved up and got the 24-70mm 2.8 L. When I first put it on my 50D I thought, WOW this lens is so much bigger than my old lenses and heavy too. I took a few shots and my excitement left my body in a blink of an eye. The shots were soft and fuzzy. I felt they were worse than my old lenses. I started to panic, thinking that I got a bad copy. I hoped I was doing somthing wrong. Remember, I am fairly new at this. And I was thank god! My camera settings were wrong. I started with my apeture settins moving it to 9.0 and went out side with some good light. A tweek here and there and BOOM! Every shot I took were razor sharp! I used these same settings with my other lenses and they even performed better. I then compared the shots to my other lenses and the L glass did out perform the others. The 50mm 1.4 came close but I needed a zoom lens. I love this lens and it will take some practice on my part to get use to the size and extra pounds. Its heavier than my less expensive lenses. If I had to pick cons it would be the price and the wieght. I will get over both of them though. Its my first L glass but not my last. I cant wait to buy my next!
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, heavy duty pro looking
Cons: expensive

Great lens!

I bought this lens brand new, USA version. This is my main general purpose indoor lens. I focused on this lens for the better aperture (f/2.8). I prefer natural lighting for most shots including indoor shot. This lens enables me to take those nice ambiance shots with natural lighting. I have 4 L series Canon lenes and this one has to be my favorite. The L series construction is very durable and solid. The focus motor is quiet and fast.
The only thing I would warn a consumer of with respect to this lens is the depth of focus. With the wide aperture you need to pay clase attention to the depth of focus. As long as you know what you're doing with that this is a awsome lens and I would highly recommend it.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, low light capability
Cons: depth of field
I would recommend this to a friend!

This is a really good lens that gives you tack sharp pictures. Great for landscapes and portraits. Pairs up great with the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens. This would have been a truly great lens if it has inner zoom (no push-pull) and image stabilization. When can we expect an update to this lens?
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus
Cons: push-pull zoom, no is
I would recommend this to a friend!

The results are really great. The lens is heavy and hard to lug around. Using a tripod is the best way for me to shoot. I wish it had an image stability feature. Pictures look so good.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
I would recommend this to a friend!
