Excellent Lens but Not Perfect

I'm very pleased with the copy that I got. It's sharp from f2.8 and sharper stopped down. But I'm now used to using L & primes, so I wasn't much impressed like when I got my first L lens. In fact, I thought this was rather kind of soft in the beginning. But as I tested, I realized this lens is pretty sharp especially as a zoom lens. What most amazed me about this lens is Image quality. It produces great color and bokeh. I love shooting with f2.8. Superb built quality. I think it's most effective when you use it with full-frame sensors even though still great with 1.6x cropped sensors. Heavy but not like 70-200mm f2.8. I actually like it. Somehow it helps me to keep my hand steady. The only thing it bothers me is that focus inaccuracy on 24mm. I have to zoom in to 70mm to make sure it focuses correctly. It's very annoying. But it's still much (I mean MUCH) better than a non-Canon lens (almost same spec as this) that I used before which had absolute focus inconsistency whatsoever. Over all I'm very happy with it.
Pros: Superior build quality, sharpness, image quality, bokeh
Cons: inaccurate focus on 24mm

Close to great

Stopped down a bit, this is a great lens from about 30mm-60mm. 70mm is very good. The wide end is really good except my copy has pretty rapid fall off in sharpness at the extreme corners. If not for this, this could have been a truly great lens
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus
Cons: mushy corners at the wide end, big and heavy

What else can you say. Excellent quality, super sharp, wonderful color. If I could have one lens for my 5D Mark II for shooting video, this would be it. Granted you would need something a little faster for really low light, but if you can only get one lens, this is by far the best to get.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

Best lens I have ever had

This lens is one of the best or THE best lens ever to walk around with. Its heavy but it has the sharpest images than I ever imagined. The build quality is excellent. And the auto focus is REALLY fast. The only problem is the lens hood, its too big. But overall, very nice lens and there's no problem with it.
Pros: sharp images, fast auto focus
Cons: heavy

A lens to love and hate
on July 22, 2010

The decision between this vs. the 24-105/4L IS was a tough one. It was IS vs. 1-stop and I opted for the latter mainly because IS doesn't help with freezing motion when shooting indoor. There are lots of merits and drawbacks of this lens as I have listed in the pros and cons section.
It is built like a tank but is very heavy, I think it is the heaviest standard lens. It handles well but not the kind of thing that you'd want to carry around especially when traveling.
The lens and hood combination is about the nicest thing because it extends farthest at 24mm making the large hood very effective throughout its entire zoom range. Picture quality is excellent from 35mm f/4 WHEN it focuses correctly (sometimes it doesn't). Significant barrel distortion at 24mm and it vanishes by 35mm. Not sharp at f/2.8. Its AF is fast and quiet but not always accurate, back focus is an issue making it unreliable. It is heavy and expensive compared to the 24-105/4 IS (as in the case of 70-200mm, f/4 IS costs about the same as f/2.8 non-IS).
So, it is a lens that I love it as much as I hate it.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, vivid colors, nice hood, very practical range
Cons: Semi-sharp images, expensive, back focus, weight, no is

I have the Canon EF 24-105mm F/4L Is Usm that came with my canon 5d mkii kit. So i was wondering whether or not to replace the lens with 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for the extra stop and better low light. I have found my answer and it is no... I was able to rent the 24-70 for about 3 days, i took about a good 500 picks over a 2 day span. I carefully compared both lenses on tripod, daytime, sunset, and at night. It seemed that the 24-70 was definitely sharper then the 24-105, but not really earth shattering sharper. You noticed that colors are more vibrant with the 24-70 . After shooting some pictures with both lenses on a tripod about over F/10 i notice that the 24-105 was a lot sharper then the 24-70 lens. The reasons why i chose my 24-105 over the 24-70 was that, i really do enjoy the extra 35 focal length. Its so much more convenient trust me. The 24-70 was extremely bulkier and heavier then 24-105 which didnt bother me at first, but ended later. The price for this lens is pretty ridiculous considering the fact that its not significantly sharper then the 24-105 and is a lot heavier. This lens is extremely sharp and good, but not the best standard zoom for its price. I believe that canon can definitely make a better version, like maybe add IS to but not changing the size. My advice is that if you have a 24-105 looking to replace with a 24-70 my answer is dont. This lens isnt a huge upgrade.
Pros: sharp
Cons: expensive, bulky and wide

Fantastic Standard L Zoom!!!

This is just the best standard zoom Canon has to offer. Used the world round by pros and enthusiasts alike, this thing is super sharp, with great color, sweet bokeh, the best all around lens for full frame shooters. I've paired it with my 5D Mark II, and it has created the money making shots I expected it to. Of course it doesn't have IS, but then again, it would probably weigh even more if they added IS. The day a 24-70mm f/2.8L IS is available, I will move heaven and earth to get that lens, but until that day, the 24-70mm is the professionals choice. Shoot pro magazine/product/wedding/portrait shots with this lens and you with never look back. Along with the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, and you've got the Canon L glass pair from heaven. I look forward to the next L glass purchase, but I know the 24-70mm L will stay on my Camera for every shooting situation I find myself in.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, beautiful colors and contrast

Excellent Lens

I got this lens a month ago or so and I am very glad that I did. I had a cheaper alternative in a similar range made by a 3rd party company and I also had the 24-105L at one point in time and this lens is better then either. The 24-105L is great but the images from this lens are just better to me. Anyone who is seriously into photography should own this lens. Absolutely fantastic image & build quality.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, the standard for this range
Cons: no is
