AWESOME LENS! EXTREMELY SHARP!

This lens is very sharp! I used to own the 24 - 105 mm F4/L and this lens by far is sharper. In addition, this lens produces better contrast & color than my previous 24 - 105 mm f4/L. With respect to others comment regarding getting soft images at wide open, these results could have been caused by incorrect camera settings.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

Highly Recommended

A couple of years ago I purchased one of Scott Kelby's Digital photography books, and he highly recommended this lense. At the time I was using the original digital rebel and only dreamed of using such a fantastic lense. Well I decided to upgrade my equipment and I started with the Canon 5d Mark II. I didn't buy a lense with the camera. I knew I wanted this lense instead of the 24 -105. So I test drove both. When it came to deciding I figured since I was already paying a premium price for either lense and that I could have the F2.8 instead of the F4 for just a bit more dough I had to have it. I purchased it last February 2009 and I am overjoyed how well it has performed. I have since purchased the Canon180 mm L Macro as well as the 70-200 2.8L IS because of this lense. The quality of the Canon L cannot be beat. I was caught in a down power in the mountains with this lense and my camera on a tripod. I quickly coverd both but needless to say they were wet. The seals on both camera and lense were never compromised. This is the real deal and you will always be glad you spent a little more for the results.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, water tight

The best mid-range zoom available, period.

Good indoors and out. Sharp, saturated images from edge to edge, on APS-C as well as Full Frame bodies. Very fast, deadly accurate autofocus, even in low light. The bokeh produced in shallow depth of field shots is amazing.
I earn my living with my cameras, and I can depend on this lens to deliver consistently sharp images under any conditions. My wife is frequently my second shooter, so I bought one for her as well. She rarely takes this exceptional glass off of her 40D.
Some say the weight is a disadvantage, but to the contrary, I find that the mass of this lens helps to hold my camera stable. I took hand-held shots in the very low light of Ripley's Aquarium, and most were keepers.
The zoom extension moves inside of the hood when extended. The lens is cleverly designed such that it is fully extended within the hood when at its widest angles, and retracted at the tele end. This keeps the front element positioned toward the front in the hood perfectly, preventing vignetting at wide angles. When at around 70mm, the front element is deep within the hood, as it should be.
The only thing I will knock this lens for is the price. But then, I think everything is overpriced. I can't argue with the fact that I indeed got everything that I paid for when I purchased two of these lenses.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, clever reverse-zoom action, deep hood that prevents vignetting
Cons: expensive

This Lens Is Nuts

It seems ludicrous to "review" tis lens as if it has to live up to some standard. It IS the standard, this thing rivals prime lenses in all aspects. I shoot a 5D Mark II and own several L lenses, all f2.8, and this 24-70mm is best in class image quality-wise. I've had it for a week and from day one I marveled at the image quality. Don't toy with the 24-105mm, the f/4 series of lenses is very good, but it's not WHOA. Buy up to the 24-70mm and have that WHOA back in your images. BTW, it's heavy. No pain, no gain. ;-)
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, brilliant hood design to work with 24mm

Not Sharp at f/2.8
on June 17, 2010

Pros: Solid build, excellent color and contrast, perfect focal range, great price, quick autofocus in good light. Cons: Not sharp at f/2.8. Thought it was me, but I've compared notes with two others and they both agree on this. Ran tests and basically, it sharpens at f/4.0 and gets better from there. This is very noticeable with closeup portraits. f/2.8 is mushy at all focal lengths, but it is worst at 24mm, where it looks downright out-of-focus. The autofocus hunts badly in low light with a 30D, 40D, and 5D II. I shot next to someone who used a 17-55mm at a reception and they were nailing every shot while I couldn't even get one useable image. That's when I decided to sell it and use primes, which give razor sharp images. I now use primes and the 70-200mm IS f/2.8 Mark II. I'm wishing Canon would upgrade the 24-70 mm f/2.8 to include IS and improved sharpness - I'd pay $2K for that.
Pros: Superior build quality, great color and contrast
Cons: Semi-sharp images, slow autofocus in low light

An amazing lens

The canon 24- 70 L is an amazing lens that envelops the best quality with a very useful focal range. THe focal length is great on a full frame, but the wide end is a bit lacking in the case of APSC cameras. In terms of Image quality the lens performs incredibly. The image quality is also on par with the 70 - 200 2.8 (non is) L. The build quality is the other amazing part of this lens. It is very solid, and the the moisture resitance is also very helpful.. Even in light rain the lens has not had any problems whatsoever. The lens hood is nice that it comes with the camera, which is canons biggest problem with non L lenses. The reverse zoom system of this lens takes a little getting used to, but otherwise it performs beautifully. The AF is another point which is in this lenses favor. The front element does not rotate, which is a very useful thing to have. Furthermore the USM motor is very fast and quick, which works well in instances such as sports.
Overall, the canon 24- 70 2.8 L is a great lens for a variety of purposes, and when coupled with the 70 - 200 provides a very good base focal length for most photography.
This, however, is all expected, since canon makes amazing products for every level. If this lens did not do everything it does it would be a unexpected. Keep it up Canon.
I would highly recommend this lens, in spite of the price, since the quality and other aspects definitely justify the price.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

Great all around

When I don't need wide angle, macro, or telephoto, this lens hits the spot for everything else. I enjoy its use for parties or events, it captures people very well. Most of its use is for documenting our company's manufacturing and design process. Great all around, and L series is the only way to go. Only complaint if I had to find one, is that extending the lens is not as smooth as all my other L series lenses. Also awkward when lens extends out about a third of the lens's length. If I had to go back and couldn't buy all four of my dream lenses, this lens would be my first pick if I could only start with one.
Pros: Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus

A good copy is INCREDIBLE!
on December 11, 2009

My first copy of the 24-70 f/2.8L was very blurry and the zoom had an awful feel with a grinding sound… so it was sent back for replacement. Got the second copy a few days ago and the first thing I noticed was a silky smooth zoom – so far so good! However, the image quality was very disappointing – some shots were better than the first copy, but others were even worse. Testing was performed on a tripod with mirror lockup and 10-sec timer, so the lens was absolutely still during the shot. From five feet away, the lens would (inconsistently) front focus between 1 and 5 inches. At longer distances the lens performed much better, but still a little softer than I had hoped for. I was very close to sending this lens back for a third copy… but decided to try sending it to Canon for repair/calibration instead. I thought it would be a good idea to get some “scientific” data of the focus errors before sending it to Canon, so I would have something to compare it to after repair.
This is when the unexpected happened… the first few shots I took for the test were amazingly sharp! Took a bunch more and they were sharp too – every single one! I’m talking sharpness that approaches that of my 70-200 f/4L IS! Color and contrast is also fantastic! I’m not sure what happened – I didn’t bump, tap, or drop the lens… it just started working! It was like it transformed into a completely different lens! I’ve taken over 200 shots since it “transformed” – from 1.5 to 150 feet, inside, outside, dim light, bright light, wide open, and stopped down – and every image is razor sharp! Even with the hassles this lens has put me through, the images I’m seeing from it now make it worth every penny!
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: blurry images (first 100 shots)
