The case is durable and I feel it will protect the phone if I drop it on tile or cement, and I do think it will be sealed against water. But I can't use the finger recognition option on my S5 now that I have the case on. The front of the case lips up and you can't slide your finger smooth across the sensor. Also, to charge the battery is a task on its own. You have the case's cover to remove, then your phone's case and have to use a tool that comes with the case. I wanted a waterproof case but didn't realize all the extra work to have it.
Pros: Durable
Cons: takes away functionality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I bought this case thinking that it would come in very handy. When it fist showed up it came without the tool to open the case. No no big deal, so i returned it and go a new one. a few days later the replacement came without the same tool. so i am returning the case and taking my money elsewhere.
Cons: Low quality, Not durable, no key
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hi mickyrick,
We’re so sorry that you received not only one, but two OtterBox Preserver cases without the key. Obviously, this is unacceptable, and we do apologize. We appreciate the feedback and will look to resolve the issue quickly. While we do completely understand your frustration, we hope that you will perhaps consider us again in the future. If there is anything we can do to regain your confidence, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at 1-855-688-7269.
This case does add considerable weight and bulk to the phone. That being said, it is definitely waterproof. I have kept mine with me in the shower when expecting important calls. Just dry off with a towel and good to go. The case ridge does interfere with the fingerprint scanner somewhat, so that I have to use the alternate password to unlock about 50% of the time. Biggest complaint is the charging port is very difficult to get to. It is about 1/4 inch under the case flap, and that makes it hard to open the phone's slot cover. I suppose you could cut the phone's cover off but that would seem to defeat the purpose. Over all though, great case.
Very nice case. Submerged it in water with and without phone in it and still dry. not too bulky. Only small issue would be the charging port. It closes and seals ok, but its a little hard to close because of the cover on the phone. You need to fold the cover on the phone over, or remove it, before you snap the case on, otherwise its impossible to charge it.
My company tasked me with choosing a rugged case for our workforce that is switching to Samsung Galaxy S5s. We need a rugged case because our S5s are used all day in all kinds of weather conditions and frequently get dropped, stepped on, etc.
I started with the Defender because it was the first semi-rugged case for the S5. I was reasonably pleased with this case, because it was not too bulky, and it is easy to access the charging port. It lacks the dust/water protection of the other two cases, however, and there was not a published drop spec.
I decided I needed better protection, so I ordered two Preserver cases for testing as soon as they became available. That case gives me great peace of mind for drop spec because it is colossal (frankly too colossal). I am certain that this case is so huge that not all of our employees will be able to fit it in their pocket, and the... um... "physique" of our average employee does not lend itself to wearing belt clips. The result is that this phone, due to its massive size, is going to get set down more often. This is a terrible price to pay for drop safety, because (in our environment) each time the phone is set down on a counter or box or car hood, there is a chance that a thief runs off with it. This happens at least monthly to someone in our workforce. What good is enhanced drop protection if the cost is increased theft likelihood? Either way your phone is gone.
This was not, however, the deal-breaker for this case. Without luxurious fingernails or a tool like a precision flat-head screwdriver it is IMPOSSIBLE to access the charging port of an S5 while it is mummified in the Preserver case. That makes it totally unusable. Even if we went with a Qi wireless charging solution (and it would have to be 3rd party, because the Preserver would not fit over a Samsung wireless charging back-plate), we would be unable to use the USB port for OTG accessories, which are necessary in our application.
Unsatisfied with the Preserver, I gave LifeProof a shot. Their case came out at the same time for the same price, but it is *much* smaller than the Preserver (in fact it is nearly identical in dimensions to the Defender). The published drop spec for LifeProof is the same as the Preserver, and the water protection is better. So this case gives the best of both worlds in terms of size and performance. It isn't easy to access the USB port in a LifeProof case, but at least I can manage it with a closely-trimmed pinky fingernail, which makes it manageable. There is literally no advantage (not even price) for the Preserver over the LifeProof. We will be using LifeProof cases at my company.
I would say this is a great case all around. Feel my phone is protected when we are at the pool, park and just simply running around. Not worried about handing the phone to the kids and having an accidental drop.... Sound quality is good, people do not complain they can not hear me compared to my previous waterproof case. Only complaint is the charging port is horrible to get open and get the cover off of because of the depth of the case over this part of the phone...... makes it really difficult to charge phone in the car if you are on the go. The Pros out weigh the cons so we are sticking with this case
This product is very great. It provides great protection and the water proof design gives you a lot of peace of mind. It does add a little bit of bulk which makes it in practical to put into ones pocket. The only thing I don't like about the design, is that its almost impossible to open the charging port on the phone with your finger. I have to use a knife to open the charging port to plug in the charger. But other than that, I really like the case.
