TurboTax2012 experience

I enjoy doing my taxes each year when I use Turbo Tax. I have been using for at least 10 years now and no complaints overall, makes it enjoyable and clear cut.
Sometimes it will take you to a detailed worksheet to fill out for no reason but as long as I get out quickly, no harm.
What's great about it: Easy to use every year, like the links that tell me more info
What's not so great: If you go into the detailed worksheets, it makes you enter more than you need to

Have used Turbo for over 10 years and think they are the most ethical and logical choice for self prepared tax returns at a very reasonable price. Load last year's return to see if you overpaid to file that year.
What's great about it: Makes you look at things you did not think about on your own!
What's not so great: Dumbed down for total newbies

Blind alleys & dead ends
on March 22, 2013

The biggest problem is that there are several deductions that have a "floor" amount that you don't hear about right away. For instance, at the very beginning of the Medical Deductions section, it should say "Do you think your medical deductions will exceed [7.5% x AGI---Turbo Tax should calculate the amount and put it into the dialogue box]?" It should offer 3 options: "(a) Definitely not" "(b) Maybe--Let's look into it" and "(c) Yes, very likely". Both (b) and (c) would lead to the details of the section, while (a) provides a quick chance to avoid going down a long blind alley that results in NO deduction.
Same thing with job-related expense ( with its 2% floor) and some of others. Don't waste my time! Just tell me what 2% of my AGI is and let me decide whether I want to explore the area or not. (In my case, I have lots of little job-related expenses, but they certainly won't add up to 2% of our AGI.
Similarly with your suggestion about putting some money into a traditional or Roth IRA. The program should be able to see that I'm over the income limits for that, and shouldn't even ask me about an option that is not available for me.
Separate item: On the section for home based businesses, it asks for the type of business. Then it proceeds to use the "type of business" as the "Name of the Business" (at least on the NJ state form). Also on the NJ form, it seems to create a second business using my personal SSN as an EIN and then asks what the name of the "business" is.
What's great about it: I got thru it.
What's not so great: Better program could shorten the process a lot
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Easy to start, move through the screens and reach the business screen.
What's great about it: Content, clear Menu, quick pass through screens.
What's not so great: Software is sometimes randomly slow
