Traditional IRA to Roth Conversion Does Not Work
on March 20, 2013
Posted by: Anonymous
The treatment of IRAs is so complex, even CPAs and Enrolled Agents struggle to get the program to treat Traditional IRA conversions to Roth IRAs correctly. A step by step guide in TTAX, with explanations along the way, is needed. I would not recommend TTAX to friends who are doing Conversion to Roth IRAs.
What's not so great: Treatment of IRAs is far too complex with help documentation that is incomprtehensible.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

Some areas for improvement
on March 20, 2013
Posted by: KenT3221
Problem areas found: 1. Although imported info from last year's return prepared in TurboTax into this years return, the import did not import information concerning mortage points being amortizied. I had to reopen last year's return and manually copy and re-enter info concerning points. I should not have to do this! 2. I imported state estimated tax payments from Quicken, but it added together two different payments made on different dates in the import, showing a missed payment on one due date, and a double payment on the next date. Why did this happen? 3. When importing estimated tax payments from Quicken, dialogue boxes should open asking whether these payments are a) prior tax year estimates paid in current year, b) taxes due paid with return, or c) current year estimates paid with current year. Then the payments will already be in the right block when one starts the review of estimated taxes.
What's great about it: Does most things well
What's not so great: Except handling of estimated tax payments and points

I have used Turbo Tax for as long as I can remember and I have never had a problem or been audited. This program is very easy to use and I would not temp to try anything else. If you haven't ever used it before, you should try it. I recommended it to several friends and they were thankful for my advice on trying it. Some of my friends have actually paid alot of money to have there taxes done by a professional and found that they saved by doing thier own. They have even check the results from the taxes that a professional calculated and came up with the same figures. I have to say that Turbo Tax is awesome. I hope you keep making them simple to use.
What's great about it: It walks you thru step by step.

Wasted Time Doing Turbotax
on March 20, 2013

1099R Is the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box checked (there is no such box. The box between 7 & 9a is called "account number" and contains the letters "PEN"
The next panel offered a choice (A) Yes the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box checked. (B) No the box is blank. ???
At the very end TurboTax did a review and demanded the the state and zip be entered as the only entries for W2 information. Because I could not get around the requirement I entered my own state & zip. Done!
3rd try Even this process is becomeing too complex
What's great about it: Good Flow Easy to Follow
What's not so great: Form errors with no work around

Navigation Issues and State File fee
on March 20, 2013
Posted by: HikerinSW
1. I found the product, in general, easy to navigate; however, sometimes I hesitated to question your calculations since I did not want to get off track. You need to work on navigation more to ensure that off-ramps and "back" on-ramps are clear. 2. To pay for the deluxe version and not get a free state electronic file is outrageous. I will go elsewhere next year. Very bad move on your part.
What's great about it: Overall navigation okay, but.....
What's not so great: Concerned about some nav. choices and impact

Data input difference for IRA and pension payments
on March 20, 2013
Posted by: Hambone001
IRA info went in OK.
When inputing a normal pension data, the program considered it as an IRA. Please, a re-program of this area would help me and other people also.
When are you going to have your program download from various institutions?
Tks, hambone001
What's not so great: very frustrating.
