More complex than necessary

I've used TurboTax for several years and love most features. However, I ran into the same huge headache again this year, and I'm thinking about making it my last year with TurboTax.
I file a joint federal return with my wife. However, since I'm military, we have different states of residence. Seems like it wouldn't be hard for TurboTax to code this into the software.
There is a solution, but it's manual: create a "real" federal return, and two #in my case, four# "mock" federal returns, then use them for state returns. Of course, the federal returns start calculating things wrong because the mock returns that you have to use for your state returns now think you're Married Filing separate, so there are all kinds of errors introduced into the calculations. Took an hour and 20 minutes on the phone with the "pro" to get it sorted out #this was after I'd already spent several hours on it myself#. What a headache! I don't think the solution we came up with was right, but at least I think it's legal.
What's great about it: Live chat/phone call helped
What's not so great: Federal Married Filing Joint with separate state returns = nightmare

TurboTax makes it easy

I have used TurboTax year after year since it makes entering the data easy, has information for each form, and is clear with its instructions. I feel confident that my tax return is accurate. A new feature was added this year that automatically checks for prior year tax returns that are not TurboTax, and I really dislike this change! It seemed to be searching my entire C: drive and it took so long that I selected my prior TurboTax file that it had already found while it was still searching and I got the 'program not responding error'!! What the heck? It finally resumed and all was well. It should simply ask me what kind of prior year file I have before searching. It also checks automatically if items like bank, investment or payroll information can be downloaded. I really dislike that change too. The program should ASK ME FIRST if I want it to search for these items before it tries to do those things. Regradless of those negative changes, TurboTax is still a good value.
What's great about it: Makes entering the data easy, helpful with information
What's not so great: Some automatic functions not welcome

Easy Process, Somewhat Confusing Error Checks

The error check section started to ask me basic questions about my adopted child that I had already entered like what is her first name. Within a few minutes I realized it was adding a second adopted child. I went to the adoption area and deleted the extra child it had started to enter. I don't think I did anything before the last section to prompt this. Also, at the end it prompted me to E-file and remember to do a state return even though adoptions cannot be done by E-file and my state does not need a return.
What's great about it: Allows for easily skipping or delving into areas
What's not so great: Error check prompted me to add second adopted child

A little confusing

I've used Turbo Tax for many years now and I like that I can control the whole process and learn about taxes as I prepare my return. Over the years I have learned a lot about how to pay less taxes by taking advantage of certain tax deductions and setting myself up for paying less taxes. Again, this is all part of the tax preparation process that I have experienced over the last several years. But also I have to say that I was surprised by a letter that I received this year from the IRS stating that I owed more tax because of an import from my brokerage account did not transfer correctly. This is all part of the benefits offered by Turbo Tax and should be a smooth process with no mistakes. Also this year, I had a sale of a primary home and it was not so easy. It was in fact confusing and I don't like confusing.
What's great about it: I've used Turbo Tax for many years and I like that I have control over the whole tax return process.
What's not so great: Sometimes it can get a little confusing like when you have something out of the ordinary like the sale of a home.

Years ago, as the filer input the data, TurboTax showed the information from previous year's input. It would be helpful if TurboTax would restore that information display so that the filer can see what was previously reported as the filer inputs the current tax year's data.
What's great about it: Everything is logical and well presented

The Good & Bad of TurboTax

Limitation of 50 chars makes it impossible to tell you of a problem with your software and suggestions.
What's great about it: For a simple return this is an excellent tool.
What's not so great: If you don't use downloads it is a very cumbersome tool if you have many entries to make.

Good overall

Used TurboTax deluxe for many years and having no problems in using. This year I have missed to type in Federal Income Tax Withheld in one of the 1099, the error checking section did not pick up this error. I have to check it manually to spot the error. Still need improvement.
What's great about it: Easy to follow step by step
