Wouldn't File Without TurboTax
on March 15, 2013

I was worried about new tax laws re "Debt Forgiveness 1099-C" received...I couldn't make sense of the proliferation of info on IRS's website (go here...go there...order and wait for 4 different publications, etc!) Turbotax handled it beautifully AND with supporting documentation. All forms and worksheets are savable in pdf format for easy retrieval. Even supplied precise directions on how to handle a missing W-2 from a defunct business employer.
My sister (a business owner) used TurboxTax 2011; but doubted the result. She submitted her docs (and paid heavily for it) to another well known commercial preparer and did better with TurboTax!
We're extremely happy with our returns and are grateful for this software. We recommend TurboTax to everyone - even the "Doubting Thomas".
What's great about it: Described and Incorporated 2012's New Tax Laws Seemlessly
What's not so great: N/A

Easy To Do

Using Turbo Tax has been great for the last three years. It has saved me hundreds of dollars doing it on my own. As long as you are honest on everything and have all the receipts or way to prove your deductions. It should be a worry free experience. It is super easy anyone that can read at grammar school level should be able to save money and file their income taxes on their own. Its like having a virtual accountant at your side. Thanks Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Easy guide
What's not so great: better help guide
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Payment for state filing fees was not sufficiently direct. Call it what it is. Also, printing prior to filing was rather ambiguous in places. Some directions were not easy to follow.
What's not so great: some directions were difficult to follow

Turbo Tax Deluxe - Download per CD or Online?
on March 15, 2013
Posted by: IrishJoe
I downloaded 2012 Turbo Tax Deluxe this year. None of the information from previous years ( 2008-2011 ) was automatically transfered into the 2012 Turbo Tax Deluxe version downloaded on-line. It appears I made a mistake by not being consistent by only downloading from a CD. I'm not sure how to download Turbo Tax Deluxe next year, if I continue to use Turbo Tax. Otherwise, completion & filing of my Federal & State Income Tax forms went very well.
What's great about it: Completion of all the federal & state tax forms is quite easy to do.
What's not so great: I'm disappointed that info from Turbo Tax 2011 was not transferable!

Very Easy and Efficient

I've been using TurboTax for many years and it gets a little better with each release. One suggestion I'd like to make is regarding organizing paper work. Perhaps come up with a shopping list of documents needed for each section of the tax prep process. I've found that I have to do a lot of jumping around between my various accounts to pull up data, so a listing of what would be needed in each section would be very helpful.
For example, for deduction of health care costs, refer user to insurance claims websites to pull down EOB information. In my case, I had medical, hospital, vision, dental and prescriptions. I did not keep track of every receipt but the claims reporting gave me all the numbers in a quick annual report. A simple checklist of potential documents to have on hand would be very handy.
Otherwise, another year done, thanks for a great product!
What's great about it: Very thorough
