Easy Tax Return
on March 15, 2013

I have used TurboTax for several years and am always pleasantly surprised by the improvements each year. The program is easier to use year over year.
What's great about it: Interview format is logical and easy to follow.
What's not so great: Incredible amount of detail required for each charitable deduction.

I've used Turbo Tax several years now, but always end up frustrated in the end. This year, I skipped the Alternative Minimum Tax when I first entered data, and when I came back a few days later it said I was ready to file - but then when I went to the AMT section it said "You must complete this".
What's great about it: Walks you through the painful process
What's not so great: Not done when it says you are

Printing forms and worksheets
on March 15, 2013

One should be able to print the forms and worksheets without printing the thank you letter and the instructions. This is especially true of the "for your records" copy. It wastes a lot of paper and ink on non-critical sheets.
What's not so great: Can not print forms and worksheets without a lot of extra information

I love using TurboTax but...

I love using TurboTax but the one thing is I had major issue last year. My ex got into the house and wiped out my computer and took all my backup files and hardware. Because I choose to purchase a CD copy of the software TurboTax currently can't help me recover my last years filed taxes. It would be a good thing if some process could be established between TurboTax and the IRS to make recovery of a lost return less painfull and less costly. I got a transcript of my last years return but still had to manually enter all my information. If a TurboTax friendly file was available from either TurboTax or the IRS that would transfer into the current year software that would be a great help. I am certain that I am not alone in the loss of the data file for whatever reason and this recovery process would help all that do use CD software. Thanks for reading
What's great about it: Almost Everything
What's not so great: But...the one thing is...

Found a bug
on March 15, 2013

I found a bug in the software. I had a list of a dozen or so charities that carried over from 2011. I selected two in the middle and the last one to NOT carry over into 2012 then went to the next screen after verifying I wanted to delete those three entries. Then I wanted to review the list again so I hit the "Back" button. It presented me with the shorter list of charities after removing the three I chose to remove, but the two charities in the same positions from the longer list were selected to be deleted. In other words, instead of spacing out all of the checkmarks after it deleted those charities, it left the checkmarks in those same positions in the middle of the list. Since the third entry I selected for removal was at the end of the list, there were only two checkmarks on the page with the shorter list. Had I not been paying attention, I would have accidentally deleted two more of the charities than I wanted to. After confirming the three charities I wanted to remove, your program should have spaced out those checkboxes in those positions so the the charities that now ended up in those positions would not have been selected for deletion in the event someone hits the "Back" button.
What's great about it: I love the automatic import from my financial advisor and also the import from my previous return.

Turbo Tax

The version with the State filing was $20 more than the Federal version. Then surprise, TT wanted $19.99 more to efile that same state return.
What's great about it: Fill in the blanks approach.
What's not so great: Tacky pricing strategy for state filing.
