Improvement Needed
on March 14, 2013

Turbo needs to add a feature to allow a taxpayer to print Schedule B and attachments for filing in the event a taxpayer does not need to file Schedule B but wishes to do so to make an effective election. For example a taxpayer (minor under age 18) has interest income on Savings Bonds and wishes to file an election pursuant to section to section 454 of the Internal Revenue Code to recognize as income the increment in value of US Government Securities issued at a discount.
By not providing this option Turbo limits the taxpayer's ability to file electronically because there is no mechanism to attach the Schedule B and the associated election (in the form of supporting detail) unless the taxpayer's total interest income exceeds the amount that would otherwise require Schedule B be included.
The same flaw exists if the taxpayer elects to file a paper return because Turbo does not include the Schedule B in the forms that are automatically printed. In this instance, the taxpayer can cure the flaw by manually printing the form and attaching it to the return.
Nevertheless this flaw should be corrected, and Turbo should encourage use of this election as it has the potential to save the taxpayer a significant amount over time.
What's not so great: Limits ability to file electronic return if section 454 election is taken

Newer is not always better

The new program just does not fit my computer screen. On each page I had to move the cursor down the form to show the options for the next step. Also, the fine details are just a bit too fine. When I'm done with one income section, it takes too many steps to get to the next section.
What's great about it: Step by Step Instructions
What's not so great: LOTS of screen adjusting!

Smoother Filing
on March 14, 2013

I've used TurboTax for decades, beginning with the DOS versions, and only used competitor's software when TurboTax dropped DOS for Windows before I did.
"Fit and Polish" is better than ever. I'll only point out the very few flaws that I came across during one of the smoothest filings ever.
In the Interest and Dividends section the "I'll type the figures myself" option #vs. the downloading from a bank or broker# should be selectable earlier and stay in place unless the user opts out of entering an entry him/herself.
Too often, the "I'll type it myself" option appeared during the last entry! it should appear during the first.
I noticed that "Exempt Interest" Dividend #box 10# was not carried forward to the final "Interest and Dividends, Forms 1099-INT, 1099-DIV." It does, thankfully, carry forward to line 86, Form 1040.
In the stock sale as listed on a 1099-B, the line noting "Special Situations Apply to the Sale," SBIC Shares is not allowing "None of the Above" to be selected.
On the next screen, the user is asked for the "Total Cost of SSBIC shares." The data was entered. However, on the Investment Sales Summary screen, my Proceeds were larger than the cost basis but no Gain was shown on the screen.
STATE TAXES
The mouse's scroll wheel stops working in the white work area, and the used may only move up or down on the page with wither the slide bar along the right-hand border or by placing the cursor in the gray area of the screen and employing the wheel.
PRINTING
TurboTax printing of the tax returns, federal and state, may be wrong if the user employs duplex printing. The TurboTax summaries and letters become the front or back pages of some of the IRS and state tax forms if the user doesn't finagle the sequence.
On whole, this year was less frustrating than previous years, although my heart sank when the program restarted at the beginning, once, and not where I had left off. The error seemed to be self-corrective, thankfully.
What's great about it: Better organization between sections and moving between them.
What's not so great: Just a few minor hiccups that scar a lovely product.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
