Printing a State return is needlessly convoluted
on March 13, 2013

Decided to e-file the federal, but mail in the state return (since there were no refunds involved). "Print State Return" is unbelievably convoluted and really never does actually print the return, despite multiple attempts. TT doesn't directly print, but instead forces you to generate a pdf, which you must then print. Not the end of the world, but I had to go thru the process FOUR times before I finally concluded that even though TT kept offering to print, all it would ever do is create the pdf. Needlessly confusing and time-consuming. My previous years' use of TT had no such problems.
Also, attempting to print a State-only return always prints the FEDERAL filing instructions (!?!), plus the FULL federal return. This is followed by the State filing instructions in the middle and finally the state forms at the end of the single .pdf. This pdf, by the way, gets named "1040 Individual Tax Return...", which is the same name that TT created when it saved my federal return. But this is supposed to be for the STATE return!!! For Calif, it should be named "540 State return" or something like that.
To get around the issue, I had to manually print JUST the state-return pages, minus the Fed-filing instructions. Shouldn't have to play these games to get a simple result.
What's great about it: Program didn't crash or loose any data
What's not so great: Won't print a simple State-only return

Possible Error

When I went to e-file my federal return, TTAX asked me if I wanted to file both my federal and my state (Tennessee) at the same time. I lived in TN in 2010, but have lived fulltime in Texas for all of 2011 and 2012. That fact was entered during the interview phase. What gives?
Also, when I entered qualified dividend amounts, I was expecting to be taxed at 15%. TTAX computed a tax on the dividends that was 18.35% Again, what gives?
Thanks, Mike
What's great about it: Love how easy it is to enter data
What's not so great: Had a hard time finding where to change the spelling of a charity name I had entered

As always, TT is most helpful.
I hate keying in a mess of charitable addresses when It's Deductible has them.
What's great about it: Great
What's not so great: Why not carry addresses over from It's Deductible!

It seemed to put in stuff, automatically, that I didn't understand.
What's great about it: I like the way it guides you through, asking questions.
What's not so great: Correcting something is confusing, cumbersome, takes longer than it should.
