2012 Turbo Tax

I have used Turbo Tax for over 10 years to prepare my taxes and, for the most part, I endorse it heartily. The 2012 edition, however, has some issues with rounding off that effectively "froze" my program on the health savings account screen and required numerous restarts, before I discovered the one-cent that was causing the problem. The problem is that while TT usually rounds off almost every entry if you enter the cents portion of your expense/income, this year the auto-round feature didn't work on at least two sections - the health savings account and the capital gains page. Both produced unequal quantities on my return. The HSA contribution was listed as an "over-contribution," evidently because it didn't match the rounded up entry on another screen. A similar problem occurred on the capital gains screen. (All available updates were loaded at the time.)
Another major annoyance is with the self-employed health insurance premiums. If you enter your SE premiums during the business income interview, and later find you have more expenses than income (no actual profit), the program doesn't suggest that you move these payments to your Sch. A medical deductions or better yet, automatically move them to the proper schedule.

If you are new to filing taxes, nervous about making a mistake, or simply tired of calculating and filling out forms, then TurboTax is for you. The program is very easy to install and the self-guided pacing is perfect. You work through the tax process one question at a time, so you will not miss anything. Once everything is finished, the forms are checked for errors, missing information, and possible audit alerts. Finally, all forms can be printed - already completed - or you may submit your return electronically.
What's great about it: Step-by-step guide, prints all completed forms, easy to use.

We have been using TurboTax for several years with good results. This year it seemed more complicated. It might just be the tax laws are more complicated. I will probably use this program again though.
What's great about it: Generally easy to use
What's not so great: There was a bug that caused me a problem.

Great Experience

Very good experience. Well organized approach to filling out forms. I have used Turbo tox in the past and this years version was much easier to use. Going back to fill in missed entries was much simpler and did not require the extra steps to get back to where I needed to be. Importing was simple and very effective.
What's great about it: EAsy to navigate, straightforward guestions, helpful hints
What's not so great: Some guestions not necessary
