I've tried several different software brands and I have found Turba Tax to be the most comprehensive and easiest to use. The step by step process was very easy to follow. I'm through shopping around I am a Turbo Tax customer for life.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: None

Overall I will continue to use this software unless a better product comes onto the market.
What's great about it: Fast with helpful tips & nice comparison with previous years return.
What's not so great: Screen navigation could be better, especially for state, & not enough details showing results vs. tables in tax schedule

CONFUSING INTERFACE

If I need help or clarity with a Form or tax topic, I should be able to go directly to it in the Help screen. Once inside Help, I should find links that take me directly to the input screen I need.
What's great about it: Hints, suggestions
What's not so great: Too dumbed down. I want to be able to EASILY maneuver to anywhere I need to go in my return.

Good but still need to know what you're doing

Had I only followed the questions I would have missed the sales tax and energy credit on our new home. (These totaled about $8K so it's a big deal. Don't get me wrong, I like turbo tax, having seen it used by clients when I worked for a tax prep chain but you still need to know what you're doing or you're going to miss stuff.
What's great about it: easy calcs, good help screen
What's not so great: questions can be misleading and cause missed deductions

Keeping it as simple as possible

The tax laws are convoluted and it just keeps getting worse. If you have a basic understanding of your finances then TurboTax keeps filing simple. I can download all of our bank and investment statements and it automatically files the info into the relevant forms. It also goes into last year’s TurboTax files and pulls in any carryovers. The questions it asks are relevant and straight forward. If you are unsure of how to answer there is a help link attached to the questions for a more detailed explanation or example. It takes me about four hours to complete the program with my finances. However, looking at the final IRS forms after filing them, I am not complaining. If I were to do this myself, far more time would spent trying to learn the tax codes along with a certainty the final forms would contain errors and/or omissions. I cannot omit the pricing. I've known people who have paid tax accountants to do their short forms for nearly the same price as the TurboTax software. I have no desire to find out what an accountant would charge for my finances. Also, the uncertainty of their abilities would always be a concern. An irony to all of this is that many of them use some type of tax software and the information they request is driven by their software package. I have been using TurboTax since 1999. Over this period of time many of my evenings and weekends have been spent doing other things besides taxes. When my taxes are submitted I feel comfortable there are no mistakes and I am getting back the maximum possible. Side note: (Intuit can delete this if they see fit.) If you are filling out the EX or short form, get out the pencil and paper or go on line and save yourself some money. You really do not need to pay for a software package or tax accountant.
What's great about it: Pulls in past history, downloads documents from banks and investment firms, ask straight forward questions.
