Great Federal Lousy State

I've used turbotax since at least 2007. I never had a problem until this year. I've recommended it to friends and family and gave it rave reviews. I don't know what happened this year when it came to filing the state return. When I filled the form out, I couldn't print it. It was in gibberish. I had to download a new program. Even then I had problems. It took forever to get to state from federal. I don't know how I finally got there, but I finally muddled through and got it done. Hope next year will work better.
What's great about it: Federal filing was easy--fill in the blanks and send. Quick Refund
What's not so great: State filing, almost impossible--3 1/2 hours, nerve-wracking, but finally done.

I cannot imagine why anyone would pay someone to do their taxes when this program is so easy to use.
What's great about it: guides through steps you need and skips steps you don't
What's not so great: none

It was easy to go through the steps. The program filled out a passive loss form when I had no passive loss. I did have a passive gain. The program carried my federal charitable contributions to my state itemized deductions, but did not add these contributions to the total. I had to do this by hand. The program told me I could not e-file my state but then gave me that option. It is easier to override mistakes than it used to be, but it seems there are too many mistakes.

I was doing my friend's tax return using turbo-tax deluxe. My friend had a general business credit (Form 3800) but some of cells were inactive. My friend had to purchase turbo-tax home & business version when she should have been able to use the deluxe version.
What's great about it: Relatively simple to use
What's not so great: Difficult to get answers to your specific questions. Also, some cells were inactive (would not accept inputs)iv

I have been using Turbo Tax for years. I sarted after being audited twice while using a national tax prep storefront company. I have not been audited since I started using Turbo Tax and doing my own returns. (saving a lot of fee dollars.)
What's great about it: I like to be guided through difficult stock transactions and investments
