Easy Refund
on March 2, 2013

Have used it for number of years. In the course of time not much has changed. The user interface is pretty std. Help messages helpful but not complete. Using the forms makes it easier to fix the errors, otherwise take you in a loop.
Taking educational deductions was tricky. Not very clear.
What's great about it: The Q&A
What's not so great: Support is 90 mins wait for password reset.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

This software is very user-friendly and it is very helpful. It is affordable and is easy and quick.
I don't know much about taxes and when it comes to taxes I have always turned to a tax preparer, who would not walk you through much of the filing process.
What's great about it: That it reviews errors
What's not so great: Questions may be confusin at times
Pros: I moved

what a headache again ths year when I could not access the state return after spending hours on the federal. Eventually a screen direction said this is a common problem this year and after I restarted the program it got "unstuck."

Ripoff for state taxes. Good for importing docs

The amount it costs to file my NJ taxes was more than my refund. Says it all. Don't be so greedy guys. The software is very very straightforward though , easy to file.
What's great about it: can import documents, good state tax information
What's not so great: seperate costs for e-filing AND PREPARING? seriously

Turbo Tax program has saved me lots of money an time. I used to spend many hours at other places and lots of cash and for what? I have been using this program for 4 years and I love it and won't trade it for nothing. Thank you Jesus Christ for Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: I love every step and process of Turbo Tax; it's simple and you view your progress.
What's not so great: The state refund should also be free.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Major Deficiency
on March 3, 2013

I've used TurboTax for many years and have been a very satisfied customer. The 2012 program however had a major Schedule C glitch and nearly cost me to miss a $5000 solar energy credit on my state return. If you're not a careful filer and were new to the program it would be VERY easy to mess up. This wouldn't have been possible on the 2011 program.
I receive two 1099 MISC forms each year for self-employment income, and have major write-offs associated. I made the correct radio-button choice that it was self-employment status. It skipped right over all the deductions! It was only when I deliberately chose the wrong status, (as an independent contractor), and it asked the correct prompts which then told me I should have picked "self-employed" did the program cycle through the deduction prompts. Repeated this for each 1099. Very disturbing.
I then went to my state form. Everything transferred automatically as expected. A refund showed up in green, then claimed I was done...time to Review. Now I know from past experience that my state asks a bunch of extra questions that aren't on the federal, so I was suspicious. Went through it manually...to find that the $47000 solar panel system I put in was never carried over, and I would have missed a $5000 state credit if I was a TT neophyte.
So not so pleased with this years' product. Really easy for a newbie to mess up big time.
What's great about it: Drop dead simple
What's not so great: So simple it skipped MAJOR refunds
