Changed days from DOS

In most cases automatic delivery of data from financial institutions has been a failure. Largely, I imagine, because there are just too many institutions to list. So a minor improvement would be for Turbotax to cut to the chase without presenting the download from institution page with " Type in data myself" as the last option. I guess if one did one's taxes in one sitting, it would not be a problem. Most of us have to do this on several occasions in which case the deviation becomes a minor irritation.
What's great about it: Carry overs from previous year are absolutely essential
What's not so great: One too many clicks required to self-enter data

Turbo Tax Review 2012
on March 1, 2013
Posted by: dmers11
I have done my own taxes for over 45 years; from by hand and moved to computer over 20 years ago using MacInTax, Kiplinger, and and few others. I have now used TurboTax over 12 years and find it very time saving.
Real time savers are:
-Greatly reducing the number of errors vs Hand Written returns. (I don't know if you can do it by hand anymore)
-Importing last year's files. (except for 2012 when they dropped Mac PPC support and I lost that capability forcing me to get rid of my old G5 Mac. The old MacInTax roots is what made the program easy to use)
-Importing Dividend income/stock sales/capital gains from most Mutual Fund Companies (You must be registered for online support with your Mutual fund)
-Easy Transfer to your State Tax forms.
-Error Checking and Review are good features.
-Printing Estimated Income tax forms for next year with calculated estimates.
-Help sections are good for questions about a form.
-Flipping form Easy Fill to the Forms direct and back is very good.
But:
On Rental section, stop asking annoying question to upgrade (We have 3 rentals to account for). Have a "do not ask again" box.
Printing of only the forms to file would be a nice option and skip all the work sheets and info. You only need to print estimated tax forms once.
Otherwise, from changing button locations from year to year, this is a very sound Tax Preparation Program.
I know our complicated tax preparation would cost at least $600 if hired. And since I have to gather up and sort this mess, I might as well just type the numbers in, print it out and mail it myself. We are beyond electronic sending c/o IRS. If they want to charge me to save time by electronic sending fees, they can just read my files for a few postage stamps.
I have had several run in's with the IRS (especially with IRA rollovers/Roth Conversions) and they do not always know what they are doing; but they are always right. I have proved my case several times.
It gets 5 stars because I am old enough to remember how bad tax prep really used to be. My old FFA Ag teacher had us do our taxes in High School every year for my four years. I learned not to fear the IRS if you do your taxes correctly.
What's great about it: Very Complete, Mutual Fund tax info import is great!
What's not so great: On Rental section, stop asking annoying question to upgrade.

User Friendly

One of us is a W-2 employee and the other is self-employed, so the tax paperwork can get pretty complicated. Turbo Tax walked me through the process and helped us get all the deductions due to us. I appreciate not having to sift through the hundreds of pages of IRS instruction booklets and complicated forms.
What's great about it: Helped me understand the process
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Bad year for Turbo Tax
on March 1, 2013
Posted by: DCRanger
I have been a solid user of turbo tax since 2004 and this year (2012) has presented me with so many issues. I know that part of the issues were due to the tax law changes at the end of the 2012, however due to bugs on the Form 2106 i was unable to file my taxes for 20 days. Section 179 would not allow the total be rolled forward like previous years and one state's total had not changed in year, but the bug would not allow me to proceed. Then once an update corrected that issue, the following was on multiple offices, while i only had one, the line 16b would not allow me to put a blank into the return without unchecking the suppress detail.
The fixes to these bugs were not declared and were all trial and error. I could have have had my return by now if i had gone to HR Block.
What's great about it: Ease of completing the return
What's not so great: The bugs that i experienced this year
