Great

You have done well. I have used this 10 years now and the progression is really good.
What's great about it: Easy to follow and the new import last year and ItsDeductible is the best.
What's not so great: Doesn't bring over previous years ItsDeductable. Does not eliminate what you don't qualify for.

Hope for the Best

I didn't file until shortly before the 10/15 extension deadline but returns were rejected, saying duplicate SSN. I should have checked the errors and filed by paper right away but didn't, and Intuit delayed refiling at 10/20 deadline with a payment error that I still don't understand. I went thru again, changed nothing, and it may have gone second time - after midnight. After midnight TurboTax said e-filing was closed for the season but apparently it went through.
Other concern: frequent donations to Goodwill are difficult by requiring dates and details of value. We could estimate total for the year with paper forms. It would help to have that option with TurboTax.
Business use of vehicles very frustrating: I retired so vehicles are no longer used in business, but that wasn't an option. I didn't sell the vehicles.
What's great about it: Calculations
What's not so great: Denied, refiling trouble
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Too Many Questions and Too Much Typing
on October 22, 2013

Turbo Tax 2012 is too invasive, ie, into a person's time. It took me about 40 hours of screen time to prepare my taxes. The biggest time waster was entering capital gains and losses. Rather than one screen per transaction with all the data that needs to be entered and check boxes for questions, you get a number of pages where you have to answer the same questions again and again and again. The import function only worked for one of my stock accounts, and even then, it forced me to review some of the items it imported. ONE SCREEN PER TRANSACTION PLEASE!!! Make that your 2013 goal. This should not be a conversation, but a place to enter your tax data!!!!!
The miscellaneous tax credits are a waste of time if you don't meet the minimum % which for me was about $3000. TT should have a big splash screen with this minimum and say don't bother if you think you will not exceed the minimum.
When it came time to file electronically, it wouldn't. Tried calling the help desk, and despite having an incident number, no one would answer and then it would go to a Fax machine. This happened 3 times on October 15 just when you need help the most. Help desk hours are also very poor for the East Coast Time zone (opens at 11am?). What is that? Online FAQ advised shutting the program and computer down and then restarting everything which eventually worked.
The State of NC tax portion was verrrrry uninformative, calculating your taxes without much detail on how it came up with the numbers. Since the print copy is also coded, more info would be nice.
All in all, TT is being very comprehensive at the expense of a knowledgeable person's time. Even if you select the non-guided route, it persists in guiding you through things. The non-guided route should be sweet and to the point.
KISS, KISS, KISS.
What's great about it: Appears bent on getting all you're entitled to
What's not so great: Takes you places you never should go but tells you this after you've wasted a lot of time.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have used Turbo Tax for 12 years. Excellent program, but do not trust that everything is correct. You must review to be sure that everything is captured correctly.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Will not recognized returns have been filed if extended. HSA forms difficult.

The program is up to date year after year and very accurate.
What's great about it: clear concise direct
What's not so great: not enough multile choice or search capability
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Makes things easy

I like TurboTax because I don't have to get out the calculator very often, the questionnaire format makes it easy not to leave anything out. The only drawback for me is that my pensions come from Europe and some forms do not allow for differences that come up such as employer ID numbers and so on. If you don't put in a number, you keep getting error messages and it takes a lot of time to work around these things. Other than that, great product.
What's great about it: Clear instructions, easy to fill out, lots of definitions of terms,
What's not so great: More stuff for people who worked abroad
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
