Great comfort in having the professional overview to ensure an appropriate return.
I have used TT even for overseas income.
Currently retired.
Thanks.
What's great about it: Covers all the bases to ensure an appropriate return. I have used TT for many years.

Still doesn't handle multiple states

Worked fine for federal taxes. Have a fairly standard set of income sources and deductions. No real complaints other than it does store all of your previous selections if you go back and make changes. Keep having to check boxes in the interview that have been checked before. Does remember some choices.
Two big complaints.
The credit for taxes paid to other states is not correct for IL.
The program lets me pay for e-filing the IL return even though the form does not qualify to be e-filed. Once paid, there is no way to get a credit.
What's great about it: Works for simple forms
What's not so great: Charges for services not rendered. Doesn't calculate IL credits for taxes paid to other states correctly

Turbotax Rocks!

I have been using Turbotax for over 20 years! The software keeps getting better and more thorough. I love the e-file option, so I don't even have to print or put a stamp on it like I did years ago. The price of the software is consistent and reasonable for my needs. Keep up the good work!
What's great about it: Consistent, dependable, easy, fail-proof
What's not so great: too many questions, but necessary!

Lets you pay to efile state even when not eligible

Filing for a deceased tax payer. If you go to the IL state web site is states those filings can not be done electronically. Recognized that the Fed return was ineligible, but not the state. Let me pay for e-filing but couldn't. Time to sit on hold with customer support again to try for a refund.
What's great about it: Finally fixed RRB- form entry
What's not so great: Let you pay for efiling and won't let you

great program that keeps getting better and easier to use year after year. I've used this program over the years and would never think of using any other program.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: hard to find specific item at times

Essential, though annoying
on October 15, 2013

I can't imagine doing my taxes without TurboTax. It makes the process significantly less difficult than doing taxes by hand and is better than other programs. The error-checking is helpful to make sure a return doesn't get rejected for minor typos or omitted information. I also like the ability to do my kids' returns in the same program.
On the negative side, each year there seems to be a new thing that goes wrong and has to be fixed. This year, it was on my son's return. For Form 8615, the program asked for parent's name, but gave the opportunity to enter only one name and put me filing singly. I caught this error myself and then had to find a way to add my wife and our joint filing status. The original result was a $200 payment; the corrected version was a $1 refund. The state figures would have been off also, though in the opposite directions.
Also, if you want to go back through to fix something, e.g., I entered $50 for a dividend and needed to change it to $60, you can't just change it; you have to go through several screens - again - before you can change it.
What's great about it: Reduces errors, makes entering information easier
What's not so great: Makes errors in certain areas, constant upselling, annoying navigation
