Long time T-Tax user
on October 13, 2013

I'm a long time Turbo Tax user with a fairly complicated return. Most of the time, I go directly to the forms, but it is nice to be able to go to the Step-by-Step feature and let the program walk me through an area that I have questions about.
What's great about it: I have a complicated return. T-Tax handled it with ease.
What's not so great: If you are using the Step-by-Step feature and you stop in mid-stream, the program forces you to go back through ea step.

For the past 2 years now I have purchased Turbo Tax with a free State Refund. For the second year in a row, I have had to pay for the filing. Last year I was sent a check, this year I hope for the same.
What's great about it: Always do my returns with TurboTa
What's not so great: Am not getting a free State e-file

Whew! Easier Than it Used To Be

I have used TurboTax products for 10 years now to file my Federal and State personal income taxes. Although I appreciate my Mom teaching me how to report my finances for tax purposes (way back when), the process has become a can-of-worms for most of us laymen to understand. Turbo Tax takes the impenetrable verbiage of the forms and government publications that are meant to be able to explain the format to us and makes the process much more available to the average person. I will say that sometimes there is a lag between when the government changes the rules and Turbo Tax prints a truly understandable version of what is expected from us.It is usually resolved before the next year's income tax refund race begins. I expect to continue to use Turbo Tax products to produce my yearly missive to the IRS and will recommend it to friends.
What's great about it: TurboTax uses mostly plain language, not governmentese to esplain the hows and whys of reporting correct info on the for
What's not so great: Some items have no explanation orsuggestion of where to look for info. They may seem obvious but they're not.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

1) There were no instructions for form 8332. 2) There were no instructions on how to file electronically if the tax return included form 8332. I had to mail the return and delay my refund, costing me delay.
What's great about it: filed correctly, sch a line11 "other person receiving form 1098"
What's not so great: did not mention form 8332
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Some glitches in 2012 Deluxe TurboTax fed+efile
on October 13, 2013

Have used TurboTax several years and been happy with results. 2012 had some glitches: Early in the program its questions for filling out Schedule C Part II Expenses included only 8 very general categories plus an "Other Expenses" category. These were quite different from last year's categories; therefore I interpreted that to mean they had changed. So I spent much time adjusting my entries and amounts, and my worksheet for next year...only to find much later that the program had arbitrarily entered those figures into 20 categories similar to last year and showing 2011's figures. Some ended up correct but some were contradictory or missing entirely. Rather than start over I am hoping the IRS accepts the generalized figures. Second glitch: I needed to enter Forms 1099-Misc info from two sources - same sources as last year. TurboTax allowed me to edit the 2012 info for the first source just fine. But the second source kept being dropped completely and I needed to enter all the initial info again. Even then it either didn't accept the second source or it doubled the amount. After several back and forth attempts it finally took. Very frustrating! Ultimately the program probably did its job well...I hope. Next year I will be looking into other programs. The glitches cost me MUCH extra time on something I despise doing anyway -- taxes!
What's great about it: Walked me through info needed; downloaded last year's info; easy; seems competent
What's not so great: Some contradictory info requests/entries

Frustrating

I've been getting very frustrated over the handling of K1 forms. I'm a passive investor in several funds that send me K1s that have entries in lines 1, 2, and 3, and there's no way I can separate them into 3 separate forms. Similarly, I get entries for line 16 that say I'm supposed to create separate forms for various categories of income & deductions - but there's no guidance on how to do that either. Then, it insists on explanations for entries when I have no information beyond what's on the K1 form.
This is just nonsensical.
If you have passive investments for which you receive K1s - TurboTax won't do it!
What's not so great: Not able to handle K-1s
Pros: I bought or sold investments
