Gets better every year
on October 13, 2013

But who needs help when everything flows right through, even the tax apportionment for three states. Previous years required some fudging with multiple states, but this year is entirely "legal". And no errors after initial complete pass. A first.
What's great about it: No muss, no fuss this year
What's not so great: Help not as good as previous years
Pros: I moved

Overall great product and has improved over time

Overall a great product for those who have some knowledge of tax return preparation or those who have simple returns and prefer to prepare themselves. The federal return software is more user friendly than the states, but the state return software has improved over the years. I file in 3 states. If you have more than one state return to prepare, it makes life a whole lot easier, but you will have to pay for the TT software and to efile in the extra states (only 1 state included in the standard price). One complaint is that on the Nonresident CT return, there was an "error" that came up in the final review asking for a figure on a line on a smart worksheet for form 6251. There is no explanation of how to calculate that number or help/guidance on where it comes from. I encountered this issue last year as well and was hoping it would be fixed in the 2012 version. Luckily I was smart enough to write some notes last year in my files which avoided recreating the wheel this year. There should definitely be a help button for this. Even better, TT should calculate it for the user. I've been using TT since the 90s and have been satisfied every year.
What's great about it: easy to skip to the relevant items so you save time
What's not so great: cryptic requests for answers to "line xx on worksheet xx" without explanation

Good with Irritations

Used turbo tax for years and years. If you use multiple states - you lose them if you need to re-load the program. Happened twice. Customer service is great - just a waste of time to go through the gyrations. My K-1's have multiple entries that require me to enter duplicate K-1's for the same partnership - not sure why - but very annoying.
What's great about it: Quick, accurate, detailed
What's not so great: K-1s, multiple states

File while living abroad

Turbotax has a data and quality gap in data input for Form 1116. I would not have been able to use Turbotax for filing US tax while living abroad except that a Big Four accounting firm did my taxes in 2011 and I was able to figure out their calculations and apply to 2012.
What's great about it: good software
What's not so great: but not good enough if you live abroad

I have used Turbo Tax to prepare and file my Federal Income Tax Return for many years. I could not be more satisfied with the results. I will continue to use Turbo Tax until I don't need to file anymore. Continue your good work.
Thank You
What's great about it: Ease of use. Assurance of accracy and error check. Ability to E-FILE.
What's not so great: I can't select FORMS and return to where I was in my return with one click.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I found that the state information gave very little help or definition when needed; it poorly dealt with multiple states and the credits available; and for some reason the program created an artifact S corporation that did not exist, and as a consequence I could not file New Jersey electronically. I tried numerous times to convince the program, wither in step by step or forms, that the fictional S corporation did not exist, and was unable to do so.
I also have found that getting back into the right place in step by step is quite clumsy. If I have to check something in forms, I could not get back to where I was. AN index would be helpful.
What's great about it: helpful n organizing my forms and doing calculations
What's not so great: Poor state information; difficult to get back into the right place
Pros: I moved
