A little Worse each year
on October 7, 2013
Posted by: BobCecil
It gets a little harder to use each year. Multiple screens for each entry. Way too much done by mouse - tough to do on a laptop keypad. Navigation is tough. Doesn't make flagging easy. Many fields that don't make sense (admittedly some of that's due to IRS). Unclear - e.g. no warning that 1099R is entered later than other 1099s.
And now ... critisizing my nickname for being to short - "Bob" being the most common nickname for my generation. And placing "terms & conditions" on a REVIEW!
What's not so great: Unclear, Slow, and Picky

fixing errors is impossible

Lots of questions and verbage until it's time to correct errors and then suddenly you're asked to make specific corrections to forms with no guidance. Also when I filed after filing for the extension, I didn't see any info about how much I paid on all of the forms I reviewed.
What's great about it: didn't have to pay professional
What's not so great: fixing errors and filing after an extension

Instructions for filing foreign tax credit from more than one CATEGORY are unclear. Rather than use the word category, the instructions refer to the 'source' that will provide the largest tax credit. It is not clear that a 'source' is a 1099-div, country, individual company or category. (I spent an hour on the computer and a half hour on the phone sorting this out.) These instructions need to be clarified specifying 'category'.
On the same section, it is very difficult to start over and try another way. 1099-divs disappear from the list when once tried and are not available for revision editing. Other people will make my mistatkes and have difficulty starting over because all 1099-divs are not available on the second try. (Eventually, after working a while in 'forms', the 1099-divs reappeared and I could do it over correctly.) The interview program needs to be revised to facilitate editing of first tries.
Still on foreign tax credits regarding dividends received in foreign currency and converted to USD by myself, the instructions said I needed to finish these entries in forms. Going to forms was mind boggling! That's what I bought Turbotax to avoid! What you need is an 'explain this' after each of these uncommon situations that tells the user exactly where to go and what to do when transferring to forms.
I have a one page Excel file that records foreign dividends, exchange rates to USD, and USD values, some monthly. I tried unsuccessfully to copy and paste this form onto one of your 'explain' pages under forms. (Rather than spend an hour transcribing the info, I decided to just keep it for future reference if audited.) Wouldn't it be wonderful if one could attach a Word, Excel, or pdf file to TT as an explanation or attachment!!!
Similarly, I had a K1 with numbers in both category D and E in box 16. The note said I needed to include a second K1 worksheet. To tax naive, the difference between page 2, COPY 2, additional K1 information form and a second K1 is very vague. More specific instructions explaining how to deal with that are needed. (Eventually I manufactured a totally new K1 from the same company including only the identification info and the one or two data that were not allowed to coexist on the original K1. I hope that was correct - it got rid of the error message.) Instructions on how to delete from the original K1 the data moved to the manufactured second K1 in forms would also help. (That took me 15 minutes.)
LastIy, took a trip to establish an investment account required by the bank because of the IRSs stringent 'know your customer' requirements. I could not find any way to deduct the trip expenses under investment expenses.(I still would not have had sufficient expenses for a real deduction.) but TT should be modified to insert an 'other' or travel expense under investment expenses.
Thanks for your attention! Aloha, Richard Thompson
What's great about it: phone support was quick, detailed and helpful
What's not so great: foreign tax credit is close to impossible (probably because of IRS, not TT).

Squeezed the most deductions out of the IRS lemon

I've used TurboTax for years and I like the possibility of importing last year's data which saves me hours of time. Only problem is that it's inflexible where foreign forms are concerned. A foreign employer will not have a US employer ID number and it took me a long time to convince TurboTax to accept the fact.
What's great about it: Easy to follow, asks the right questions
What's not so great: doesn't allow for special circumstances: foreign forms
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
