Liked the step by step

Overall makes taxes much easier. Some items could use further explanation. For example, itimization.
What's great about it: Covered each item so we didn't miss anything
What's not so great: Not enough explanation on some items
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Por Software Performance
on October 3, 2013

The software has a significant glitch that all most prevented me from filling my tax return. It filled in a fed and state form showing Capital gains in the State of OK yet the actual source was from a New York Bank. I could not go into it and change the automatic text box from filling in with the false information and tried to over ride. It still refused and would not let me file since it showed it and an error the needed fixing. I finally had to by pass the form by inserting false data to allow me to file. This is the worse I have seen Turbo Tax after many years of using the product.
What's great about it: Quick to get completed
What's not so great: The software has significant glitch
Pros: I moved

Thorough for Peace of Mind

I've used Turbo Tax for many years. Transferring key data from one year to next speeds the process. It also can 'go get' applicable information from certain financial institutions and employers. The fact that the software generates numerous worksheets that I wouldn't want to have to wrestle with adds to the sense that it is thorough. A bummer this year was that because I didn't have all charitable contribution data collected when I filed an extension, addresses for all charities had to be looked up and re-entered with each charity. Biggest concern was how slowly it ran in October; don't remember whether that was a problem when I began in April or not.
What's great about it: Covers the bases.
What's not so great: Sometimes runs exceedingly slowly.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

TurboTax 2012 with several State return
on October 3, 2013

The TurboTax system worked well again in 2012. Some confusion developed when multiple states were involved. I wanted to eFile federal and one state which were free - and manually (paper) file the remaining state. The options selected worked fine for the efile but left me no easy way to file the manual state.
Otherwise, TurboTax 2012 worked well.
What's great about it: Excellent process for entering information
What's not so great: Multiple states caused confusion - especially when filing
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Federal excellent, state (IL) flawed but effective

The US Federal tax program is very user-friendly and "knowledgeable." I would like it if you could revisit/review sections just to check data entered without having to march through all the interview steps. That aside, a great program.
The state form I used (IL) is not as well developed--natural, I suppose, when there are 50+ states/territories to program. Two important elements were hard to locate: how to apply this year's refund to next year's taxes instead of receiving it, and, especially tricky but important: How to deduct the U.S. Obligations portion of mutual funds that are partially invested in Treasuries (e.g., if you own a Bond Mutual Fund and the fund administrator sends you info that 22.7%, or whatever, of the dividends are attributable to U.S. Gov't). That portion of dividends is exempt from state taxes, and TurboTax glosses right over that--potentially costly.
Both problems were resolved with a chat and a phone call, respectively, to TurboTax support. It took them a while to figure out what to do, in each case, but they stuck with me and figured it out. Both were ultimately solved in Forms View--helpful to know about.
And, a more minor point: The state form has no "explore on your own" option that I could find, so you can't jump ahead or back to sections as you can for the Federal.
Significant potential for software improvements on the State form, but it did ultimately get the job done.
What's great about it: Can do almost everything
What's not so great: Occasionally it's hard to find the way to do what you need to

What a great help!

I completed the return in much less time than when I prepared a
much simpler one by hand; and I feel much more confident that
it is correct.
What's great about it: I didn't have to find proper forms and decide where to make entries.
What's not so great: I can think of none.
