Not a great year for Turbo Tax
on April 30, 2013
Posted by: Saddadio
Over the years TurboTax has had some good years and some not so good years. This was a NOT.
My K-1 was improperly entered. I had to go to a professional tax preparer to find ways to lower my taxes that went completely unnoticed by Turbo Tax. "It's Deductible" is a nice program, but it did not work on Safari. I had to use Firefox.
I hope it will be better next year, or I will just use a professional person.
What's great about it: It easily downloads information from previous years.
What's not so great: It screwed up information on my K-1 and the changeover from an IRA to a Roth.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Wow!
Even with a rejected Federal Tax return, the software has a quick fix button to guide you to correct your mistake!
All I needed was to correct my younger son's social security number!
What's great about it: Qucik Fix button
What's not so great: Searching for a solution takes some looking.

Turbo tax asks the right questions. I gathered the data that was needed. Plugged it in and voila got it done.
What's great about it: Saves hours of time and reduces the cost and need for a CPA
What's not so great: At the end a had a little trouble finding the 2012 Return on my computer.

Turbo tax is easy and quick. However, the state tax programs are expensive to purchase and expensive for filing, especial if you file with more than one state.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: State programs are expensive

The questions in the K-1 section are not sufficient to create correct Form 1116. The forms need to be manually manipulated to get them correct.
What's great about it: Can look at forms to see what is populated. Can click on a form box to get to entry of data.
What's not so great: Form 1116 Foreign tax

Once a page in the Easy Step process was reviewed and answered, the page might not be there if I wanted to go back and change my answer. Several times while doing this year's return, I either made a mistake or I deliberately chose a different answer to learn more about a particular part of the tax code. Most the the time I was able to go back to the previous page and change my answer or undo my choice. But sometimes, the page where I made the wrong choice was gone, and I couldn't it back to it. So, to undo a bad response, I had to go to Forms and manually make the adjustments. This was a cumbersome process.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: tricky to undue a mistake
