Going Downhill

Did not like the new format of Turbo Tax. Have been using TT since it was Chipsoft - starting about 1994 and each year TT showed improvement and added ease of use and features - except 2012. It seemed to go backwards on both counts.
Not sure I will use TT again.
In earlier versions I was able maneuver easily between sections. With this version for example, I entered in State Tax paid - with some difficulty in getting there - but was never able to get back to it to edit or enter more information. It seemed like you had one shot at it then tough luck.
In previous version you had the easy ability to Click on a box like Medical Professionals and enter the info for each individual Doc that would give you the total. In this version you can only put in totals. At least I could not find an intuitive way of doing it in TT. I had to rely on Excel developing the totals for each category and then manually transferring the totals to TT. This was also true of Property Taxes Etc. Where did the detail capture go?
In the earlier versions when printed out the reports (or files) you could get all the supporting Data for the return and not rely on keeping a separate spreadsheet.
I also found that Its Deductible was more difficult to use than it was in previous versions.
It seems TT is more interested in selling more services than supporting the user in their use of TT as they had done in the past.
The Screen print capability was also eliminated. I could not print the Display the showed my return was transmitted. It contained the transmission information and directions on who and how to contact someone if you did not get a response on the filed return. Instead we are to wait for an email from TT sometime in the future.
What's great about it: I saw no Pros over past versions
What's not so great: 2012 is not as good or as easy to use as previous versions

Good, but could still be better

This year was difficult for us. The recession combined with a stroke and ongoing TIA's have left me disabled, drawing SSD, and in a real bind with creditors. Fortunately the bank that held my student loans was willing to forgive a rather large debt. But then I found out that the forgiven amount would be considered income, and that I would be taxed on it. Then, to my great relief, I found out (not from TurboTax) that if I filled out a worksheet proving insolvency, along with Form 982, I would not be taxed on it. First question: why didn't TurboTax present this option to me? Second question: Why were the required forms so difficult to find, and not built into the step-by-step? I have used TurboTax for a couple of decades, and have come to trust that every possible option to save money will be presented to me. If I had not discovered this option myself, by googling for solutions, it would have cost me about $6000! I will never again be able to trust Turbo Tax 100%.
What's great about it: Like the step-by-step, clear documentation
What's not so great: See review below...
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Turbo Tax 2012 - Great way to save Money
on April 15, 2013

This is an excellent product for filing your home and small business taxes if you do them together, but PLEASE read ALL of the information. The bad review below said it didn't state it wasn't for partnerships, well it DOES state that. It tells you very clearly in the product information that if you are a partnership, etc, then you should buy Turbotax Business 2012 and not this one. I am a sole proprietor and file my home and business taxes together, so this one is great for people like me - very simple and saves me a fortune in accountant fees because my business isn't too profitable YET!
What's great about it: Fast, Easy, Simple, and worth the time over humans tax preparer
What's not so great: Cost of Turbo Tax is To High!

A Taxing Experience
on April 15, 2013

Being serious, I find the questions asked by the program non-judgmental, easy to understand and very thorough. It makes the new items the IRS introduces every year less intimidating and transparent.
What's great about it: Reloads last year's taxing info so that I don't have to.
What's not so great: Reminds me how much I paid in taxes and much I lost in interest from overpaying.

I liked using Turbotax for ease of its use and consistency. It is pretty thourghu in the information t asks. It easily impors large amounts of financial data.
Some features that can be improved: I noticed couple of errors in my stock sale data. To correct them, I had to start at Federal taxes, go though income to stocks, and answer all the same querries I had answered before, go thorugh the rest of the same screens before coming t the end. May be you can use markers, to ease correcting minor things. May beyou have them, but just to be safe, I went through all the screens.
Also, may be number the stock trasactons, so if I have to locate one among hundreds of entries, I don't hae to pour over allof them.
Finally, I savd the PDF fle and printed the returns rahter large amountof paper. Wehen I made minor changes andresaved te file, noticed, it changd the order, Short term Box A, then Long term Box B, then short term box B. Before it was short terms boxes A then B then the long term information which is a logica sequence. I don t know what caused the change.
What's great about it: Eas of use and consistency
What's not so great: To go to a particular entry, you have to go through too man of the same screens

Not so great

The program changes too much from year to year and the changes should be explained or have a custom view that appears as the year before.
I am very unhappy that after using Turbo tax for the last 8 years - I was not offered a discount from the normal package pricing.
What's great about it: Fast
What's not so great: Needs more detailed descritions and help
