Import Fails
on February 27, 2013
Posted by: SterlingM
Even though the program seemed to indicate that it imported the data from my 2011 return it did not import any of the numerical data so when it put up comparisons of last year to this year all the last year values were zero.
Even though the program indicated it was importing donations data from my It's Deductible account no data was imported and i had to hand enter everything.
What's great about it: In general fast and easy
What's not so great: Failed to import last year's data and data from It's Deductible

WOULD NOT TRANSFER MY WIFE'S 403B CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FORM 8880. I HAD TO DO THIS SEPARATELY AND HAD TO OVERRIDE TO GET IT TO ACCEPT THE AMOUNT.
IT KEPT ASKING ME TO FILL OUT THE HOME OFFICE WORK SHEET, EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT CLAIMING A HOME OFFICE, BEFORE IT WOULD EFILE. I HAD TO FILL IT OUT WITH 0'S AND A DATE FOR BEGINNG USE BEFORE IT WOULD EFILE.
What's great about it: WAS EASY TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE MOST PART
What's not so great: SEE REVIEW BELOW

Second year in a row I have had problems E Filing. The problem stated for rejection does not exist. Last year I spent way too much time trying to correct it in order to efile but I had to mail them in as I am doing this year. Starting to think this isnt worth it.
What's great about it: Adequate Software for Returns
What's not so great: E File Issues

Kiddie tax

Things that should compute automatically don't. Turbotax found no errors, but the IRS rejected the return because two numbers did not match. It took me over an hour to figure out how to force the numbers to match, and I'm a CPA.
What's great about it: The forms are included.
What's not so great: Many lines on 8615 indicate they are calculated, but they do not have any amounts.

Smooth, efficient

Need more info on tuition paid for children and tax consequences.
Closed out an HSA account and that was confusing!
Cheerful tone, easy navigation through the program, good summaries of each section.
What's great about it: Overall summary of each section of taxes (income, deductions, credits). Running tally of refund or tax due.
What's not so great: The question of full-time student, child, also employed and whether he can be claimed as dependent is always confusing.

TurboTax did all the work.

Using the It' Deductible component helped me to get the most for my charitable deductions. The assigned values took the guess work and research out of the valuation of my donated items. I kept good records of each item donated to ensure I would get the most credit for it when donated.
What's great about it: Covered all the bases.
What's not so great: Difficulty going back to review previous steps detail.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

e-file problem
on February 27, 2013
Posted by: Arjo
E-file was rejected first time because box was checked on line 53 for form8910, but 8910 was not included. This was corrected and 2nd attempt rejected because of incorrect or missing data. Box had been cleared and 0 removed prior to second attempt.
1. TT program should not have checked box when no credit was applicable. 2. E-file program should not have required form to be included when no credit was being claimed. 3. If data was not correct or missing TT should have detected when it checked the return. I suspect that these problems maybe due to the rush to get the program out after congressional delays. It would have been better to delay release than to distribute before debugging was more complete.
What's great about it: Preparation was convenient
What's not so great: e-file problems and assistance
