Simple, Quick, Complete... Loved it!

Turbo Tax Deluxe made filing my returns easy and quick, and I got very good refunds.... as I did last year with Turbo Tax, as well. I'll use this system next year and the year after. I recommend this to friends and family. I used to pay a lot of money to a tax consultant to do my taxes, and I didn't get the great dollar refunds that I now get from using Turbo Tax. I love using Turbo Tax.

Turbo Tax is a great investment. Taxes made easy.
What's great about it: How much time I got? Super easy walk through process.
What's not so great: Had to download updates to get up-to-date forms
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

As usual the step by step tax prep that Turbotax uses is quite easy to use. I was a tax preparer in the past and we used Turbotax and this was just as easy.
What's great about it: Simple to use
What's not so great: A little slow on start up

Too bad GNU/Linux is not supported

I have Windows on this computer, but I prefer not to use it. I use GNU/Linux for all of my real work. I can't get TurboTax to work in GNU/Linux so I have to boot to Windows every year to do my taxes.
This year, there is a bug in the retrieval of the state form. I select the state form to download and it replies with "Your software is up to date" and puts me back in the page to select the state returns. I found it difficult to fine the help page to tell that it is a known problem and the circumvention is to exit the program and start it again. For a while it seemed that I had to purchase the state form, but I knew that wasn't right because TurboTax Deluxe comes with one state form included. This is the kind of bug that I would expect that Intuit would fix.
What's great about it: Realtively easy to use
What's not so great: Doesn't work in GNU/Linux; bug in state form processing

My experience with Turbo Tax has always been great. I've used it for the last several years to do mine and my husband's joint returns. It's always been pretty quick and easy to follow. The step by step look through everything is very helpful in making sure you don't miss anything.
What's great about it: Quick, Easy-to-Follow, Inexpensive
What's not so great: None

Potential software problem

I noticed a problem with how data from 1099DIV gets transferred to schedule B.
When you enter an amount into the TT program for line 10 (tax exempt Interest) on the TT1099DIV data entry form and when there is no income (0) for line 1a (or any other lines on the 1099DIV), you get a line item printed out on Schedule B for 0. The correct tax exempt amount does go onto line 8b on the 1040.
Example: the 1099DIV for Fidelity Tax Exempt Money Market show lines 1a through line 9 as $0 and for line 10 as $50. You enter the $50 for line 10 in the TT 1099 data entry form. The $50 show up on line 8b 1040, but there is also a line entry on Schedule B Part II for Fidelity Tax exempt Money for $0 (presumably TT is taking the $0 amount from line 1a). This happens even when you don't put anything into the line 1a box on TT data entry form.
In my case, I have 17mutual funds, 5 of which only generate taxempt income. The 2013 turbo tax program printed 12 of the 17 mutual funds I entered into the TT program onto Shcedule B part II, printed a separate schedule for the remaining 5 funds, then added an entry "see additional dividends" onto a line on Schedule B Part II.
The amounts were all accurate and the tax calculations were all correct.
My question then is, should the tax exmpt funds with $0 taxable dividends be showing up on Schedule B part II? By including these, it ends up generating an additional schedule because all the lines on Schedule B are used up. In the past TT programs, the tax exempt funds did not appear on the Schedule B since there was no taxable income. Again, the tax exempt amounts show up on 1040 line 8b as they should.
What's not so great: See Review
