Very thorough questionnaire

I have been using Turbo Tax for many years and find it to be thorough and easy to use for the most part. For the 2012 federal questions, I got confused by the question under Other Income State Tax Refunds which includes a question about the amount of State tax paid with my 2011 return. The same question is asked under Deductions & Credits where I also entered the State tax paid with my 2011 return. It caused the amount of State tax paid to double on the worksheet. Even when I went back to delete my answer under Other Income State Tax Refunds, the amount was still doubled in the worksheet. I had to open the Federal Carryover Worksheet and use manual override to delete the duplicate entry. I took me a long time to figure this out by myself. It seems this error should have come up in the Review section but it didn't. Besides that problem, I am very happy with Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Easy to follow questions
What's not so great: Had trouble correcting my entry error

Our returns are pretty easy to do. Turbo Tax makes them even easier to do by pulling in all of the information from the previous year. We won't consider using any other program or service.
What's great about it: Easy to follow, expecially after using Turbo Tax for many years.
What's not so great: None

Easy to use, easy to follow, logical. If only the college admission departments and all federal agencies would take notice, and follow your example.
What's great about it: proper question flow and wording = understanding
What's not so great: a plain english verision of "explain this" would be a nice addition

Probs with Illinois Civil Unions
on April 15, 2013

Last year, Turbo Tax had a quite workable fix for filing a return for partners in a civil union in Illinois.
Illinois requires partners to calculate their federal taxes as if they were married -- though they must of course file individual federal tax forms -- and to then use the pretend joint return numbers as the basis for their Illinois tax so that the Illinois tax is the same as if they were married,.
That was handled last year in a manageable way by TurboTax. But this year, Illinois also requires partners to a civil union to file a Schedule CU, in which numbers from Partner A's fed form as filed (with some adjustments) in Column A, numbers from Partner B's fed form as filed (with some adjustments) in column B, and numbers from the pretend federal joint return in Column.
Turbo Tax did not even inform civil union filers of the need for IL Schedule CU.
What's great about it: Everything worked great with one BIG exception ...
What's not so great: Key Info missing on filing Civil Union in IL
