trouble updating
on April 15, 2013
Posted by: David618
The files were small pdf files that gave a permission error. I had to find the file, alter the name and then run update again. This happened about 3 times during the prep of the tax return
What's not so great: several files crashed the update program

Use Turbo Tax every year

I have used Turbo for over 10 years and it continues to be rated by me as being #1. I am able to go from the interview to the form itself and view the information that I have placed in the return and then back to the same place again. Thanks Turbo Tax for being there and for being #1 in my book.
What's great about it: It is fast, easy to read and understand, takes hardly no time
What's not so great: I have nothing bad to say about Turbo Tax

Every year my husband wants to try to find something that I have done wrong on the taxes. And every year he combs through the printed forms and finds nothng. I always just sit back and smile. :)
What's great about it: Each year the improvements make this experience more enjoyable (if you can enjoy paying taxes)
What's not so great: None

I have used for years. Main reason is to avoid having to type all stock transaction info. Wish more employers allowed W2 info download.
What's great about it: I love the download of schedule D info
What's not so great: hunting for specific forms not easy

After one gets the paperwork together, TurboTax takes you by the hand and walks you through the process of filing taxes. What is foreseen to be an ordeal becomes fairly easy, as TurboTax takes you step by step through every (or at least what I think is every) posssible scenario. Sometimes with too much detail, promising savings if you choose certain options (e.g., investing in an IRA) only to find out that you are not qualified because one's income exceeds the upper limit. There could have been an explanation before then detailing the limits and possibilities. This would have saved me the time of investigation, since my taxable income had already been determined. My other complaint is that a correction or an addition is followed by a series of questions concerning things that seem unrelated to my correction. For example, I changed my property tax and then was asked about investments in foreign banks. Also, after I was done and the program had supposedly checked "everything", right before I submitted my taxes, the program infomed me that I had entered a zip code incorrectly (I had also misspelled "university"). Why didn't it see this before if it checked "everything"? In spite of these minor things, I feel TurboTax is far better than any other tax software and makes me wonder why I would ever spend my money on an accountant.
What's great about it: Clear definitive questions and explanations
What's not so great: Hard to move back and correct

Filed with 3 states and federal. Had to pay for 3 state e-files, THEN was informed that all had to be printed and sent by mail anyway. Would have done the printing and sending by mail first, and not paid for e-file. Will not use turbotax again.
What's great about it: easy/step by step input
What's not so great: Did not inform that forms must be printed and sent before paying for e-file cost

I love the way you can trasnfer info right into turbo tax: from last year's return and from finnancial web sites. I wish more places allowed for a download!
I had some difficulty in going back and forth between sections in the topic lists--if you go back to something you end up re-answering the same questions, when you just wanted to update one number.
What's great about it: being able to transfer last years info and download much finanical info
What's not so great: wish more places made the download available.
