TURBO "SPEED" TAX FILING

EASY, NEARLY 20 YEARS OF SUCCESS WITH TURBO TAX!! BEATS THE OLD PAPER FILING METHOD BE LIGHT YEARS.

Good Enough not to need a professional

I have been using turbo tax for about 5 years. Prior to that I use to do my own taxes. The software is intuitive and relatively straightforward. The only issue I have is not every topic is explained in full. I needed to go to the IRS website to reada few publications.
What's great about it: Guided Tutorials, Forms are viewable, prior year import
What's not so great: Not all topics covered equally

Turbo Taxed

Have used TT for decades. Always felt confident that return was correct.
What's great about it: Easy to use. Walks through all the steps so nothing is missed.
What's not so great: Not explanatory in commonly used areas.

Decent experience in 2012, with some issues

Overall experience was good. Did most of my tax return in early March, then set it aside for a few weeks, until April 14. After software updates (12 or 13 updates identified), a number of errors cropped up. Most of these didn't make sense, but I was able to provide basic yes/no values to eliminate all but one error. This related to form 5405, homebuyer credit recovery. We had not received the homebuyer credit, did not claim it before, and I never indicated that we had in our eralier or current return. Yet the program was trying to force me to enter a purchase date sooner than our actual purchase date, and the program wouldn't let me move past the error. I researched the online forum and tried different things for about 45 minutes, before finally figuring out I could manually delete form 5405. Very annoying issue, and the online forum had dozens of questions about this, but no answers from Intuit folks or the TurboTax community. So I was on my own, which made this extra frustrating.
Separately, I tried revisiting one of the deduction amounts (sales tax) to see whether I was eligible for a higher deduction, but the program did not let me do anything other than take the standard deduction or manually enter all my taxes paid from receipts. The first time around, the program allowed me to enter exceptional expenses and associated taxes. I had more of these to enter, but could not move past this glitch. So I believe this actually cost me by reducing eligible deductions. Even more annoying than the first issue, but I didn't have the energy or time to deal with this any further, so I just submitted my return.
What's great about it: UI still intuitive, worked well
What's not so great: Error checking and change issues

I wish the file we save could be password protected automatically with the SSN as a password.
