need to improve E-File
on April 15, 2013

TurboTax wouldn't E-File my returns because I had two Employee Business Expenses forms (2106). This will happen to me each year unless TurboTax updates it's E-File capabilities. This will cause me to pick another tax prep software company.
What's great about it: electronic completion of tax forms
What's not so great: unable to E-File !!!

8th year in a row of using TurboTax

Great user interface. Very clear. You are asked a question, and you simply answer it. If you want to get into the details, it's all there, but for those items that are not applicable, you can simply move on.
What's great about it: clear guidance and access to details when needed
What's not so great: Pricing should also include free e-file of State return, otherwise the total sales price is misleading.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

My wife did the taxes for the last 15 years. My beloved wife passed away from illness last year and I needed help catching up with the financial aspect of our life. TurboTax was a great help in performing taxes on my own. It was worth every penny!!
What's great about it: A streamline approach to the tax form, well organized
What's not so great: 1 or 2 questions a like ambiquous

Have used it for several - maybe 20 years - only mistakes on my returns have been my entering incorrect data.
I do not have complicated returns so I cannot rate the AMT or depreciation schedules but it works for me

No problems this year; earlier problem in previous year with state return resolved quickly by Turbo Tax associate.
What's great about it: Recap & review at end of each section.

For the most part, this is a very easy program to use. There are certain areas where you have to know what you are looking for or use the search tool (ie: union dues) to find. This should show up on deduction tools.
What's great about it: Easy guided directions
What's not so great: Have to look for some deductions that aren't on easy guide

Still the best

We have a fairly complex tax return, with multiple K-1's plus home office expenses to fool around with. We have used Turbotax for years (the little row of file folders in our backup computer drive goes back to 2003!# and have never been seriously disappointed. I do the "step by step" and then go back to the forms to make sure they look right. Then my husband #who is a CPA# nit-picks them all over again. There is only one thing that regularly give him something to crow about, and that is that, when Turbotax imports data from Quicken #which we've been using even longer#, it is not transparent. Not all of our categories in Quicken are being used precisely as Quicken intended, so sometimes stuff gets classified as taxable when it isn't, or vice-versa. Then, when you input k-1's, etc, it doesn't recognize that that same income already got imported via quicken. Bottom line: either your income or your deductions, and usually both, are double-counted. This year we had a 170,000 double-count in income! #offset by smaller amounts of double-counts for deductions.# Sorting that out took a couple of hours, and yielded dramatic swings in our tax liability. PLEASE make sure that, when you look for "source data" for an entry, if the source was Quicken, it says so. Right now it does not.
Second, unlike prior years, this year the program essentially ignored the fact that our return showed a penalty. The issue was the timing of our income, and would have been easily resolved, but the menu never offered the opportunity. This hasn't happened in the past --what gives? Once we looked at the final return and saw the problem, we were able to go back into the program and fill out the annualization forms so the penalty went away. But the program never even warned us about the penalty, and should have offered the chance to review the annualization calculations.
All things considered, TurboTax is a terrific program that does what needs to be done.
I would like to specially thank Turbotax for the clean and simple interface for low-income filers. I work with several individuals who are struggling due to handicaps or other issues, for whom the annual tax refund is a critical part of their financial life. Once they learn about TurboTax free-filing, they can go online, fill out the forms, and get their tax refund without paying somebody to do it for them. Best of all, they can see why their taxes come out as they do, and make intelligent decisions about how to handle them next year. Being able to make sense of the tax "black box" gives them a huge boost in self esteem, and for two previously homeless women I have worked with, it has given them the insight and motivation to start real financial planning and discipline, and ultimately to get out of the financial quagmire they had put themselves into.
Even if I didn't already like TurboTax for my own taxes, the benefits you provide to less fortunate people would make me a fan. Keep it up!
What's great about it: thorough, mostly intelligible
What's not so great: interface with Quicken still needs work
