Much Easier & Better Result by Far
on April 14, 2013
Posted by: Quikor
I had used the "other" top tax-prep software for the past few years but this year it ran me into 3 infinite loop errors and didn't like any of my answers. On top of that, it slated me for a huge Federal payment instead of a refund, which I generally get. On a prayer for a different result, I switched to Turbo Tax and ran it all through again. There were no errors, loops or problems. Turbo Tax was a far better product and helped us get Fed & State refunds instead of owing this year. I'm leaning on amending previous returns now to see if they were screwed up too.
What's great about it: Very easy and thorough
What's not so great: Not One

I've used TurboTax for decades, but this year (2012 filing) seems to be much quicker and certainly easier than past products. An outstanding Tax Preparation software, once again, TurboTax !
What's great about it: Highly Detailed, yet easy to understand and use.
What's not so great: None.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Why pay someone else big bucks when you can do it yourself? I've been using TurboTax for years. It makes doing taxes so easy plus it gives you ideas for the next year so you can plan and save information to write off expenses, etc. The only trouble I had was that in a couple instances the instructions needed just a bit more information to make it clear what you needed to enter in fields or what expenditures were in question. For example, I wasn't clear about multi-year adoption expenses. The information was there but I had to dig a little. I nearly missed a $1000 credit! I caught myself but only because I've been at this adoption thing for 5 years and learned from past mistakes. But I sure wished TurboTax flagged me from the start. Anyway, maybe what I mean to say is it probably needs to be just a tad bit more dummy-proof. Great program. I get it every year and worth the money to buy it. And you don't need to be computer savvy, just know how to follow instructions. You will get your money back and more.
What's great about it: Makes it so easy to do your own taxes. Just follow instructions as you go.
What's not so great: Some instructions needed more elaboration.

What's great about it: That it told you what you were missing.

Using Turbo Tax was a stright forward process. Start to finish took about 3 hours which included some research on my part.

Makes it bearable

Again, makes the process bearable which is a fine achievement. For experienced tax filers, future updates should let one turn off the interview approach and just use the explore option saving a few clicks that happen each time. Then, in the listings, essentials and their dependencies should be better highlighted. Items that aren't dependencies shouldn't require stepping through each time for updates to other items and there are a few of these occasions that occur. Overall, consistent with past versions.
What's great about it: Simple to use
What's not so great: Should give options to only view menus
