Quick 'n' Easy

Most profitable two hours I've spent in many years.
What's great about it: It took less than two hours to complete both federal and state (just one) returns.
What's not so great: Form 1099R from Fidelity Investments had box 12 = $0.00 and box 14 blank. This was not acceptable to the state.

A product I turn to year after year

I feel confident with Turbo Tax that I have reviewed all the issues I need to address. It tells me right away which documents I need for reference. Then gives me a choice of following it's lead through each of the major sections for income, deductions, credits, etc or entering them on my own.
This is a product I come back to year after year because it is both efficient and cost effective.

I did both my daughters taxes and my taxes and it was a easy to do. it walked me through every step and answered all of my questions.
What's great about it: I really liked the Charitable Work Sheet.
What's not so great: None.

Gets More Complicated Each Year

I've used TurboTax Deluxe (desktop edition) for many years now, for both my own return and for my adult son. I am retired with pension income and an investment portfolio (both IRA and taxable accounts). I really like the ability to download capital gains and dividend information. But then TurboTax asks a whole lot of questions for each transaction and they take a lot of time. I know that the questions are designed to determine whether dividends are qualified, and whether capital losses are wash sales, but my broker has already done that analysis, so I shouldn't have to repeat it.
In recent years my youngest son has been working in foreign countries, and may qualify for the earned income exclusion. TurboTax makes it very difficult to even recognize that he is an expat. I have read reviews by other expatriots, who say that other tax programs deal with this much better.
I don't think TurboTax saves me any time over the old-fashioned paper and pen method of tax preparation, but it makes sure that the calculations are correct and keeps me out of trouble in a lot of other ways.
What's great about it: Reduced data entry
What's not so great: Increased complexity and details
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Simple Refund- One evening and done!

We have used TurboTax for a number of years, and I always have found it generally easy to follow to make sure that I do not leave out anything. The clear headings and easy-to-click-through sections make it a streamlined process to get my review done. One thing that TurboTax needs to include-- and teach their on-call assistance about-- is ground rent. I had to do extensive research on my own in order to figure out how to deduct this expense. Overall, I would definitely recommend it and will continue to use it.
What's great about it: Mostly thorough, Generally clear, Simple

Not Happy

We have been using Turbotax for many years and are generally happy with the tax preparation package except for this year. The removal of the custom charitable contribution function within the PC/MAC desktop version of the software resulted in a very time-consuming and labor intensive process. Even worse, the lack of response by Intuit to the many questions in the forums about this was unconscionable since it was obvious many people relied on this function.
Another bothersome feature is when one re-enters into a section (like the Schedule C - Business) you have to constantly re-answer the same set of questions that should not require re-answering. For example, how many times do I really need to say my business is a computer consulting business, or I played an active role in the business. There have to be better ways to re-enter into the data entry sections of the the Income and Deductions sections of the tax preparation software.
Last, when I am ready to file but want to print out the tax return for review, please add that as a clear option instead of sending you to a web page explaining how to print the tax return.
What's great about it: Solid tax preparation package, mostly easy to follow instructions
What's not so great: Poor customer support, removal of custom charitable data entry was extremely poor decision, re-entry points bad
