Elementary Deduction
on April 14, 2013

I've been using TurboTax for years. After hiring a "tax expert" to help me with my taxes after buying a house and starting a business, I discovered that the "tax expert" missed a couple of key deductions. After burrowing throught the tax documents, I discovered that TurboTax could help me slog throught the myriad levels of tax bureaucracy and take the pain out of paying taxes. Once I get my own documents in order, inputting the data is easy and makes filing a snap. Since my brush with near-disaster with the "tax expert" years ago, I made it a personal goal to learn as much as I can about personal taxes.I have taught many workshops on the subject and at each workshop, I exhort the attendees to use tax preparation software such as TurboTax. Makes the painful less so. Deductive reasoning says using TurboTax is elementary!
What's great about it: Ease of entry of necessary info
What's not so great: The fact that I still owed money despite the best efforts of the software!

Turbo Tax is the way to go if you dont want to spend $300.00 on tax preparers. I paid way too much last year just for them to file the EZ form.
What's great about it: free e- file
What's not so great: extra state is too expensive

My Review 04142015

I have to be honest. Doing taxes with TurboTax for the last 3 years has made be feel bad about using an accountant for the previous 13 years. The software is pretty simple to use for our not-too-complex tax situation, but I can tell it is up to the task for more difficult situations. Hasn't got me a refund, but it has definitely reduced the liability. I have to work on the right combination of withholdings for our family. Thanks TurboTax!
What's great about it: Easy to use and steps through tax situations
What's not so great: A little confusing at the end to determine state payment deduction from refund.

The use of Turbo Tax greatly reduces the chance of errors in what could be a very complicated proceedure. For years I have used pen and paper however, since changing to the Intyit product tax time has become a much less frightening proceedure. I will recommend the product to all.

Confusion on return
on April 14, 2013
Posted by: imtpayer
I've used the product before and never encounter the problem I had today. On final review it stated that everything was good, but then in another check it found some errors to fix. When I re-entered the same numbers from the W2 the refund amount changed to the worst, once finally completed I did not get the same return amount again, this time was lower. Can you explain that.
What's great about it: I hope the return is accurate
What's not so great: Glitched on final completion

Seems quicker, didn't seem glitchy; a small issue

The information in the Pro's and Con's mostly sums it up, for me. The current "interview" scheme of the software seems much more efficient and quick than many earlier versions. There was a cost to that, though: zooming through a topic, I almost missed some items I needed to address (due to going a bit faster, I guess#.
I used a Windows 8 laptop, and the software ran without a hitch #on the desktop mode).
I used the web-based Turbo Tax last year. When I came to the section that allows one to import from last year, I couldn't seem to bring in my data from the web software. The software designers and developers seemed to assume that if you are using desktop software this year, you must have used desktop software last year. Since so many things I would have pulled in changed anyway, I decided to skip trying to import. But that could be a needless problem for some users.
What's great about it: Seems to go quicker, not glitchy, worked well with Windows 8
What's not so great: Seemed possible to accidentally skip some items, trouble pulling up info from web-based TurboTax from last year
Pros: I moved
