I have used TT before and was in general happy with it. This year everything was going well and I was told there were no errors in my return--until I paid to e-file state (federal was included) and tried to e-file both. Neither went through, giving me a message that the EIN I entered is in correct, even though I am a federal employee (and not working for an obscure employer) and the EIN I entered was correct and obtained automatically by TT from last year's return which was e-filed succesfully. Also suddenly I got another error that my state income was less than twice the withheld tax. I went in and found one digit had been removed. I hadn't even returned to that part of the s/w after entering the W2 info in the beginning. I also couln't find answers to simple questions like can I write off the tax I paid in buying an SUV or some of the expenses in purchasing my home. These are not rare situations. I went to the "TT community" and found many people had asked the same questions with no answers. That area is a joke. The whole experience is very frustrating and now I don't even trust that the calculations are correct.
What's great about it: if your situation is very straightforward, it can do the math for you
What's not so great: Lacking sufficient useful guidance, full of bugs
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I love using Turbo Tax! Easy to use, much less costly and just as accurate as paying someone to do your taxes. Covers all possible deductions.
What's great about it: Pulls information from previous years, lets you know if there are any errors, gives you an audit risk rating, easy.
What's not so great: Some of the questions on the vehicle expense deduction section are confusing and could be asked differently.

Always An Easy Last Minute Filing

The title was selected because I try to sculpt our withholding so that we do not get a "tax refund" but rather have to send in a small balance. This year, $82.
As mentioned in the "Pros & Cons" frames, I used to file our family's taxes by myself, by hand. That was; our joint return and separate returns for each of our two daughters.
After a few years of wrestling with a real estate limited partnership K-1, I sought the aid of an accounting major college student. He did our taxes through college and, as a favor, even after he established his own company to do taxes for commercial businesses.
When he finally had to make the break form personal income taxes, I was greatly relieved to discover TurboTax and I have been a loyal satisfied patron ever since for at least nine years that I can remember, maybe longer.
What's great about it: Over many many years TurboTax has always enabled me to file our joint return and our childeren's individual returns.
What's not so great: I do not have any "cons" with TurboTax...I used to file my family's taxes by hand.

Often it would say something like: "Can you take any XYZ deductions this year?" To which my answer was often "How do I know? Isn't that your job to tell me?" Just quoting the Federal regs in a help box is not useful. I need to know what the regs mean and how to determine if I'm eligible for a certain deduction.
What's great about it: Just asked me questions and organized the results for me.
What's not so great: Too many times it asked questions to which I didn't have an answer:.
