2012 turbo tax review

1.Entering time periods for partial year residencies are impossible if you live in another state for a mid year period.
2. Correcting sales tax errors are impossible to implement. You can't get to the entry in error. Turbo tax did not allow me to correct an initial input error.
3. For the most part State tax is done on blind faith.
4. You do not have access to the electronic copies of the federal forms until you have filed. I have used TT almost since its inception and I will not use it again.

What's great about it: Guidance, ability to review, thoroughness, ease of use.
What's not so great: Was a little harder to get into profit and loss for business.

Struggled with 529 college distributions

529 distributions were paid to my wife rather than directly to my daughter's college. The distribution funds were then paid directly to the college payment plan and should be considered qualified distributions. In previous years, distributions from a 529 plan were paid directly to his college (a different college) so that he was designated as the recipient rather than the 529 account owner. I really struggled with getting the inputs entered so the TurboTax treated the distribution as qualified and calculated the education credits correctly. This consumed a couple of sessions reading the IRS pubs and needlessly working through additional worksheets. I see from the on-line help that others seemed to struggle from similar issues. It seems that TurboTax could do a better job with this topic.
What's great about it: Great interface, easy to navigate menus, links to IRS pubs
What's not so great: Struggled with college and 529 college distributions

I remember my father spending days doing his taxes and I did mine in less than 2 hours!
What's great about it: Fast, reliable, cheap.

Problem with sending state return

When I went to send my state because I don't currently have a working card to use it refused to take my name to verify a use of my refund to pay. This will cause me to have to find alternate means to send my state return. Very inconvenient.
What's great about it: Doing tax was quick and easy.
What's not so great: Would not accept my name when tried to approve deduction from tax refind to pay for State tax return.

2012 review

I had to call live help and agent was very helpful. She walked me back thru info entry and eventaully solved the problem but never figured out what had gone wrong....frustrated that I had to refer to hard copies of 2011 forms for certain info - why didn't this pick up the electronic cp[ies saved on my computer/ major compliant with website is that it was very hard to find downloadable version, buried at bottom of page. I did not want to do this in the cloud.
What's great about it: step by step is very helpful
What's not so great: did not input from preview turbo tax forms - one reason I stuck with Turbo Tax

Great tool, accurate, easy to use! when new tax situation arise it is there with additional questions and to walk you thru:)
