confusing

Some the sections to claim work expenses for a home office are very confusing. There should be more instructions to help you when you claim office equipment that is spread out over more than 1 return
What's great about it: walks you thru each section
What's not so great: confusing for claiming home office expenses
Pros: I had a baby

Troubling ambiguities
on April 14, 2013

OK, I'll grant that the ambiguities in the tax codes are seeds of the problem. Still, TurboTax gives lots of options and "help" that only a tax attorney could be sure of - maybe. Typical: "Do any of these situations apply to you? [Uncommon]" followed by a list of "Who the heck knows what these are, and although some of them might actually apply, I'll have to hold my nose and hope not." All exacerbated by forms like 1099s that provide the data but no explanation. My mother just died and left some money and her house that had sold but not yet closed, so next year I'm going to have to break down and use a CPA after using TurboTax for 13 years or so.
What's great about it: Tie to e-imported information
What's not so great: Too many ambiguous items and insufficient help

Good but with imperfections

As good as ever with important reservations. First, despite facilitating the creation of a substitute 1099-R, the 2012 program fails to recognize that a pension paid from a foreign country will not have a Federal ID, nor state, nor zipcode. The final audit prior to efiling flags these omissions and will not permit efiling - despite the fact that in prior years this was acceptable and returns were efiled.
What's great about it: As easy as ever to transfer from previous returns, import financial data, and guide completion
What's not so great: The logic regarding overseas pension income has changed and prevents e-filing.

Better learn more descriptions
on April 14, 2013
Posted by: Kitsam
I've been using TurboTax for years and years ... 10+ (maybe even 20+#, and it seemed that this years version had more helpful 'learn more' descriptions. In past years, where I wasn't sure if I should include something or not, the learn more did not help me. This year, the learn more descriptions told me exactly what was and was not to be included and why. I like knowing 'why'! The only negative #and this is a nit# was that when I had to leave my return in progress and come back another day, there was no 'continue where I left off' option, even with the guided view.
What's great about it: Better learn more descriptions
What's not so great: No 'continue where I left off'

I have used Turbo Tax for several years and it does save a lot of time and stress.
What's great about it: Fills in the places needed with me having to find those spaces
What's not so great: Some explanations need more information.

highlight changes
on April 14, 2013
Posted by: nhhandyman
when there is a change in situation - divorce or house sale, I think the program could do a better job informing me of the 'paths' it is taking me down and why "because of your divorce, we need to confirm that yyy is correct, this will effect you in these areas..." for example.
otherwise - fine.
What's great about it: easy - takes in prior years info
What's not so great: does not highlight changes
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments
