More Problems Than Ever
on February 21, 2013
Posted by: SherrieL
I’ve been using Turbo Tax for over 10 years now. This year there seemed to be more problems than ever before. Maybe because I know more of what I am doing or maybe they are getting sloppy. 1.) On the page showing the comparison of 2011 and 2012 Deductions & Credits, next to Unreimbursed Employee Expenses, for 2011 the number was the total reported (not the amount allowed for deduction) and for 2012 the number was the amount allowed as a deduction (total reported minus 2% AGI.) This gave me fits until I figured out they were comparing apples to oranges since I know that in 2012 I had a lot more deductions than 2011 but 2011 was showing a higher number. 2.) On the page showing the Picture of Your 2012 Income, an IRA that I rolled over from one investment firm into another showed up under income. I’m sorry, that is not income. I had it for years before 2012, it was just moved to another account. NOT income. 3.) For some reason when printing out my return to send in, a page titled “Additional information from your 2012 California Attachment” with all of the information that had been on the page titled “Additional information from you 2012 Federal Tax Return” was printed out. When I looked at the .pdf I could find no sign of the incorrect “California” page and just reprinted the “Federal” page. If I was not so careful and checked things out twice, the incorrect page would have gone out. 4.) I’m not sure if it is true or not, but it certainly feels much harder to move easily through the step-by-step areas when reviewing or making corrections.

What's not so great: Encountered 3 different inconsistencies and/or problems

Easy, with Minor Glitch
on February 21, 2013

Overall, this was a good experience and was relatively easy to follow the directions. The only glitch occurred in the final review when I was asked to fill in Box 16 from my W-2 form. Check on my W-2 form revealed no Box 16. This led to a call from the support service, which took a little long to connect, but once connected, the representative was very nice and cordial. After working with me for a while, she didn't know what to do, since she was a technician, but not a tax expert so she transferred me to another phone to talk to a tax expert. I must say she was very pleasant, and did not feel negative about her help. In any case, while waiting to speak to the tax expert, I returned to the page asking me to fill Box 16, and after studying the page a while, found that if I scrolled below the shown page on my computer, there was a small printed line indicating "show Box 16". Well, I pressed the line and the form with Box 16 showed up, asking me to input my income for my state taxes. Once I did that, everything else went smoothly, and the tax was filed. Hopefully, there will be no glitches in the remainder of my Turbo Tax experience this year. So I guess I figured it out on my own and didn't need to speak to a tax expert. Overall, it was a relatively easy experience, although it took quite a bit of time.
What's great about it: Easy to follow most directions.
What's not so great: One glitch in finding info to fill a box.

Have used TurboTax for several years now and I like how simple it is to use and it's knowledge of all the new tax laws/deductions that you are allowed to qualify for. It has definitely paid for itself!!
What's great about it: Simple follow the program, answer questions format.
What's not so great: Sometimes have to restart program to get to next step.

Not too bad.

I have been using TTax virtually since its inception. I love that the data is pulled forward saving typing time--except for the online version I used to do my children's taxes (students). Online, though TTax OBVIOUSLY remembers them, I had to type in 99.9% of their data that would have pulled forward automatically in the pay version.
Also, in the calculation department, TTax (paid version) somehow pulled an incorrect amount to 2012 for prior year state income tax refund. Good thing I noticed it and overrode the error.
Generally, TTax is still getting better year after year, though I still find the interview method so tedious that I always go "Ctrl 2" into the forms method so I don't fall asleep!
What's great about it: Pulls much data and info. forward from last year.
What's not so great: Pulled wrong amount from last year's state income tax refund.
