TurboTax makes life easier samesex folks

Turbotax has saved my husband and I hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars in tax prep fews because we live in the awkward category of RDP/married SS partners in CA. Many friends have lamented having to pay huge fees to preparers who after months still don't know the ins and outs of ss filing. It's still not simple, but turbotax at least takes the time to explain the situation to us and provides relevant information for our situation. Thanks for extending a hand to those of us with crazy tax situations.
What's great about it: Anyone can do it
What's not so great: Could use a few more features for RDP and samesex

Good Product - easy to use

This is a great product with easy to follow step by step instruction to walk you through your filing process. I had only two issues this year (and this is the first year I have ever had any issues as a long time turbo tax user) and they were, a) rejection of my initial filing for state as the form was lacking something in the e-signature area, and b) the initial filing didn't include my real estate tax payment information from last year so I would have had to send an amended form to correct this. Admittedly, these are both core things that were probably user error rather than software (I was up late finishing and tired and must have misentered the info#. However, I would have thought that the property tax the software would have caught that I had an amount included in the federal return for real estate tax paid and brought me back to the Illinois residency question to correct. When reviewing my printed return I realized that the amount was blank for property tax paid in 2012...I went back the next day fixed the problem and was walked through filing an amendment very well by the software #I was very happy at how easy turbo tax made this process as I have never before had to file an amendment and had absolutely no clue how to go about it#.
In the end everything worked out for me since the initial filing was rejected due to the signature thing and I had not yet sent the amendment, all I had to do was return to turbo tax and go back over my state filing, #allowing me to fix both errors at the same time) make the necessary corrections and re-file. Once again, turbo tax software made this process easy and I was not charged a second time to re-file my now correct form.
It is only for these reasons that I did not give it 5 stars, and I am not sure that I shouldn't still simply because, a) user error played it's part in my issues, and b) fixing them was a breeze because of this software.
Overall, I would highly recommend turbo tax to anyone wanting to make the switch to self-preparing electronically and in fact I have done just that on many occasions over the years that I have used this product:)

My father died and left me an IRA and life insurance proceeds. I couldn't discern the difference nor results depending on how questions were answered.

Good product

Very good product with just a few areas that I would suggest for improvement. I mentioned the request for viewing of last year's charitable amounts and dates to help remind me for the current year. I also would like to see you create a dataset of my income, deductions, other information, and tax calculations for prior years lined up in separate columns by year and downloadable to Excel or other analysis software. This would be good information for me to analyze my ax history. Thanks! ...Steve
What's great about it: Good walkthrough of all income and deduction sections. Very thorough!
What's not so great: Did not show me last year's charitable deductions as i was filling out 2012. Would like dates and amounts to match up.

Overall, a very positive experience. This was the first time I have used Turbo Tax. I typically take my taxes to a professional service and have them done. It was easy to follow and didn't take long to complete. Only negative is I got substanially less return than I have received in years past. I don't know if I did something wrong but my income and deducts were similar to years past.
What's great about it: It was an easy format to follow, caught things I forgot to add.
What's not so great: I didn't get as big of a refund, like when I take them into a tax service place.

The Easiest Way to Build Confidence

When I prepare taxes for my husband and myself, as well as for my children and their spouses, we are always amazed at the questions and the depth of the information that Turbo Tax helps us dig out. Even when helping my daughter and her husband do their multistate tax filings, we knew that we were covering everything once we answered all the questions. Thank you from a long time user!!!
What's great about it: I always feel extremely confident after completing our taxes because Turbo Tax Questions go the Extra Mile

Simplifying Complexity

With multiple businesses and many investments of differing types, TurboTax makes it easy to walk through the forms to keep it all organized. The way it asks if other situations that are commonly occuring with the types of things we have might apply, helps to keep us from overlooking things. If you have everything organized before you begin, it's a very painless process.
What's great about it: Easy to follow steps. Completeness checks. Audit review.
What's not so great: Sometimes a challenge to go back and change something.
