Very Good Tax Software

Turbo Tax software is very easy and a good tool for calculating taxes and submitting e-files for both federal and state taxes. I have been using this software for the last six years, it is very fast and accurate. From the last couple of years I have been also downloading my W2 and 1099-INT and DIV information on line which saved my time and information was error free.
I would recommend this software to anybody.

TurboTax is easy to use and I have confidence in the tax return I have prepared.
What's great about it: Easy to use!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Still have to know what's what . . .

I've used TurboTax for many, many years.
I LOVE how much time it saves me with its import features:
previous year's info, form fill-in, HUGE timesaver.
You still have to know what you're doing when either filling in the forms or answering the guided questions.
It doesn't read your mind.

Easy - but Search index could be improved

Before I started using Turbo Tax, I dreaded doing taxes. Now it is easy. I file with itemization, and it takes me about four hours to do both state and federal, including breaks for lunch, to find missing 1099 forms and the bank routing number, walking the dog, and getting distracted by the TV.
My complaints are small.
1) Some items were not listed in the search index the way I want to find them, such as "automobile excise tax", which can be deducted if it is based on the value of the automobile.
2) I was informed that I could flag an item for later review, but the feature was grayed out in the left panel and the menu. I have no idea what to do to make it active.
3) The IRS always used to challenge me regarding SSDI. It took me years to get right. Special guidance should be offered for this. Do you enter your spouse's SSDI as income? What about your dependent children who receive SSDI because of your spouse? I am told yes for the first, no for the second, but it would be good to have it spelled out.
4) For the first time, I had to file business income and expenses. It was not obvious what the business category should be for book publishing royalties, and I had to go to a government website to get sufficient information to make the choice.
On the plus side, I like how for many items, I am shown my prior year values. This is a good confirmation that my entries are in the right ballpark, such as mortgage interest and excise tax.
And importantly, when I was offered different ways to file, the cost was explained up front, so there were no surprises.
One suggested improvement: One year I made a gross error in my withholding and needed to revise my W-4 form. At the end of filing taxes, I would appreciate an advisor that would help me decide if I should change how many exemptions I claim so as to make my refund smaller or tax owed less, assuming my income and deductions remained similar in the following year.
What's great about it: * Import of information from prior year is a real time saver. * Good explanations of terms. * Compares between years
What's not so great: * Could not find automobile excise tax in the search index. * Could not figure out how to flag for later review.

I TELL EVERYONE - DON'T USE ANY OTHER SOFTWARE TO DO YOUR TAXES...DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON SO CALLED PROFESSIONALS WHO CRAWL OUT OF THE WOODWORK ONCE A YEAR TO DO TAXES. TURBO TAX IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO!!!
