Overall a big help to file our taxes.
What's great about it: Good instructions
What's not so great: Printing istructions are not clear. End up with lots of copies of stuff I don't need.

Easy to use
on April 13, 2013

I have used Turbo Tax for years. I find it easy to use and hopefully accurate. However, when it is still downloading updates two days before the return is due my confidence is somewhat shaken. What is being updated? And what would I have missed by filing a few days earlier?
Overall I really like the product and like the two year comparison which gives me a quick overview to see if I have missed anything.
I would recommend this product to others for doing their taxes.
What's great about it: Step by step walk through
What's not so great: Not confident that everthing is accurate

Same gender marriage

1. When creating a dummy married filing jointly fed return to serve as a basis for an Iowa married return, you have us start with one persons actual federal return and then add all the other persons info. Why can't you just import both sets of information and merge them? As it is, every detail of the 2nd partner's info must be re-entered when it has been entered on their individual fed return.
2. Based on your instructions, I thought that if I wanted to do married filing separately for each of us that I would create 2 dummy married filing separately fed tax form as the basis for our separate Iowa tax forms. I wasn't told to redo the fed part. As a result, when the Iowa section prorated the charitable contributions, it prorated my individual contributions and I basically lost half of them. The same thing happened on my spouses Married filing separately return. As a result, I changed to married filing jointly to ensure that the information would be properly coordinated.
3. Please make sure your instructions about the dummy form make it clear when additional information must first be entered on the dummy fed version. Also, make sure your procedure for married fling separately is properly explained and that it has a mechanism for dealing with the prorating of deductions step.
What's great about it: Appreciate that Turbo tax created a process to help us through this
What's not so great: More labor intensive than needed to be and problematic

More intuitive than I thought

We've been using TurboTax for ages, that in itself says it all. Start to finish, with time out for research, and a few snacks, took around 5 hours,,, much shorter than writing it out longhand, with better accuracy.
What's great about it: Smarter than I am
What's not so great: Skips around when I think it should stay on one area, but then it comes back later

Double Input
on April 13, 2013

It would be helpful and a time saver to provide a MFJ option which would combine MFS for both the federal and state returns. Now I enter three sets of data - husband, spouse, and joint - to determine the best financial option.
What's not so great: MFS v MFJ option

Net News was GOOD! Iowa is solvent!

I have been a long time user of TurboTax ... going way way back, when the rates were much lower! :) TurboTax has always helped get the most accurate filing and maximize any refund or minimize any payment due. The questions and prompts regularily remind you of documents needed and deduction opportunities that you can easily forget. And the program doesn't get frustrated with you when you have to go over an area multiple time to make sure you have all your information and have entered everything that you need!
If they could just organize all my records this easily, I would file early all the time .... Thanks TurboTax ,,, keep up the good work and I appreciate all your help in this very taxing problem!.
What's great about it: Exceptionally well organized to Help every step of the way!
What's not so great: Text Search for help areas required quite specific information.
