the latest version should be able to OPEN previous years returns filed via turbotax

With the Easy Guide, I was able to confidently cover, step by step, all the bases concerning Income and Expenses without having to research thru all the Forms and Instruction Booklets.

So Easy a Cave... (oops, wrong company)

I like the fact that all the data and personal information will transfer right into next years return. The reviews detected the 1099 form entry errors mentioned in the above cons section. The process flowed nicely between topics and explanations were readily available.
What's great about it: Work a little, go play and come right back to where I left off.
What's not so great: some of the 1099 forms didn't fill out easily, I didn't notice certain fields separated out ie. city state zip

Turbo Tax makes life easier

Turbo Tax makes the tedious task of tax preparation as easy as possible. If you can follow directions, you can do your own taxes, no matter how complex your situation might be. If you're a novice, Turbo Tax will guide you every step of the way. If you're more experienced, you can dispense with the guidance and fastpath right to the forms you need. I've been using Turbo Tax for about a decade now and cannot imagine doing our taxes any other way.

2012 Turbo Tax

Software was as expected until I reached the IRA contribution basis section (2012 was my first year receiving an IRA distribution). The software is extremely confusing and misleading in the EasyGuide questions it asks about entering any situations that apply on IRA nondeductible contributions. It appeared that I had two situations applying: (1) Some of my traditional IRA contributions were not deducted on prior year tax returns, and (2) I transferred money from an employer's retirement plan to an IRA in 2012 or a previous year. However, when I checked both those boxes. Turbo Tax always gave me large refund amounts and it never asked me the total value of my Traditional IRA (which was required, according to detailed instructions, to figure out how much percentage of my distribution was exempt from taxes due to nondeductible contributions in years past.) when I checked the 8606-T form it did not have any data in lines 6 thru 14 and I couldn't figure out why Turbo Tax wasn't asking me for the information. After 3 long attempts at restarting TurboTax, I found out by chance that I could only use the first situation described above to get Turbo Tax to request information about my 2012 year-end value of my IRA and fill out form 8606-T correctly. Turbo Tax then seemed to produce viable (logical) results which dropped my refund into negative territory (bummer!).
What's great about it: Cheaper than a tax filing service
What's not so great: Extreme confusion in the Non-deductible contributions to a Traditional IRA section
