Next year will be even easier!!

Overall it was pretty easy. Years ago before I owned a home I did my own taxes, then I had someone doing them until she retired so this is the 1st year I tried to do them. I found out from relatives that they used Turbo Tax without any problems so decided to give it a whirl. Didn't realize you had to list each donation I thought they all just got added together, I had never seen that worksheet. Next year I'll be better prepared.
What's great about it: Leads you through it.
What's not so great: The whole mineral rights thing was too confusing especially for a whole $156.

I've used Turbo Tax for the past few years. One time I tried other preparation software but it was more trouble than it was worth so I returned to Turbo Tax.
For 95% of my return the program works flawlessly but changes in work and deductions have been a problem. I did some contract work in 2011 and for 2012, the program allowed me to remove that source of income but when error checking, I had to manually remove the forms related to contract work. It also didn't deal with the sale of a vehicle well, requiring me to manually remove forms for that too.

What's great about it: Walks me through the majority of return with ease
What's not so great: Doesn't handle changes in work or deduction status well
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Fast & Easy Tax Return Preparation!

Turbo Tax Deluxe is an awesome tax return preparation software. It is so easy to use and guides you through the entire preparation process. Your return is done and e-file in a breeze!
What's great about it: Guides you through the whole Return preparation process.
What's not so great: Didn't automatically recognize that I didn't need to file State Return even though it prompted me with an FYI.

Whenever there's a help dialog that tells me, step-by-step, how to calculate a figure... I'm thinking "isn't this what the program is supposed to do for me??" This seems to be more prevalent with the state returns, probably because the engineering focus is on the IRS returns.
What's great about it: mostly seems to work
What's not so great: import errors from brokers, state calculations done manually
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Excellent program, constant checks for updates were beneficial. I used the EasyGuide function that walked me through all the fields and forms which was easier than trying to figure out the forms on my own. I have been using TurboTax since 1998 and it just keeps getting better - unlike the tax code!
What's great about it: Navigation, summaries, and explanations
What's not so great: After automatic update the program did not restart
