Railroad retirees caution
on April 9, 2013
Posted by: EEIII
You have to push to deal with all the material you have. I would like to see a list of all the possible W2's, 1099's, and so forth at the beginning so you could mark the number of each that you have, and the TurboTax could be waiting with empty boxes. I think the common person (me!) has little idea why there is a 1099 and a 1099-R...
What's great about it: The step by step keeps improving
What's not so great: The two 1099's that come with a railroad retirement require busting back into the step by step to report correctly

Good program, this is my 10 year using it. Keep up the good work.
What's great about it: Easy to use and keeps up with changes
What's not so great: Has not found a way to find more deductions, it seems to look.

Many years experiance with TurboTax
on April 9, 2013

The software keeps my "last year" information so that I don't have to fill it out each year. The last year information is available on my computer and TurboTax imports what is needed this year. I would have to go through last year forms to find the information if I was using the paper method. I would have to start at the beginning and work to the end. Now the important stuff imports and away we go with the interview. I have one suggestion and that is to use ItsDeductible, an online record keeping system that will import directly into TurboTax. I keep all receipts in a file and once a month I enter the data into ItsDeductible #on line and free#. All my church donations, all the community donations, every donation goes into ItsDeductible from Girl Scout cookies to clothing. The software checks my progress and accuracy of entering data. If there is a questionable value, the software gently nags to get confirmation #or correction#. In the past two decades I have had to get outside help only once and that was when I retired and had no clue how to proceed. There is help online to solve this problem but I was apprehensive enough to go to the professionals. I will be using TurboTax next year and the year after. Thanks TurboTax for your annual improvements to the software. JerryG
What's great about it: The interview method of filling out the forms is best for me
What's not so great: I have no significant con to report
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I have used TurboTax for years. I find it pretty straight-forward.
What's great about it: Makes everything clear
What's not so great: downloading W-2 was a little challenging

Erl's comment

While I was inputing my data, I kept seeing how much tax I was due, then after the deduction and the amount of estimated tax I paid were completed, I began to see my refund. This sounds right. But I can't recreate those tax due numbers again.
Likewise, I can't go through the previous path again when I reached the end of data entry. I wish it likes the tax preparation sheets that I can always turn to the previous pages.
What's great about it: Easy to use

Easier than expected
on April 9, 2013

I'm glad I chose to use Turbo Tax again after several years of expensive tax preparation since the first time I tried. It is much easier than one would expect, even with multiple deductions. The explanations provided along the way were very helpful, and there are links to IRS information as needed. The "help" options solved most of my questions, and the "community" was also helpful.
What's great about it: Explanations available along the way
What's not so great: Error messages with no explanations
