Turobtax Deluxe

I have used turbotax for from the very first edition. It has continually been improved to make it easier to use. All the new tax codes are implanted into the software so that I do not need to know new rules.
I highly recommend to all self preparers....

What's great about it: logically laid out, easy to use, accurate, compares current year to previous year, ItsDeductable is a great tool
What's not so great: none

Using Turbotax

I started using turbo tax a while ago after being disappointed by the person who did my software. After seeing the way the tax was prepared, I was sure that I would be able to do it better. Since then Turbo Tax has been my constant go to for filing taxes.
It imports all the previous years tax information from saved files (you have to do save the tax returns and have them available for import).
It guides through every aspect of the tax information and also imports information from financial institutions (this is extremely useful since entering the information from 1099B is not easy).
It gets the exact refund you are expected to get. I dont know how people promise returns as some huge bonanza falling from the sky.
The audit protection is vital particularly when the stock markets are good and there is a good income from them. When the IRS sends you an email, just let the audit protection know about it and they will take care of it. You may still owe something but it will be a lot less. Also, a tax professional speakes to another one and hence you are not in any legal hotwater. Use the turbo tax and buy the audit protection.

It would be great if, as you are using Turbo Tax (TT), you could click to see the IRS form being filled in. I realize this could not apply to all forms, since the tax code is complicated and there are intermediate steps, but Schedules A, B, form 1040, etc (all the common ones) could have most of the info filled in. At a minimum there should be a button labeled "What form will this show up on?" that you can click to see where it is used.
Also, there needs to be method to "Kill" an old form that no longer applies. Several years ago we were in an investment club, and the club closed; this generated a distribution that showed up on a schedule K., and foreign investments were involved. So every year after that we are asked to for information for a schedule K. You need a 'kill' button that says "This form no longer applies", or something to that effect.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: I don't always know what form the info will go on. NOt always easy to see how to delete info.

There are some areas that are hard to understand. But the rest you can go on your own.
What's great about it: 90% very straight forward
What's not so great: 10%, might need a consultant
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Happy with Turbo Tax

I like that I can move around and do the sections and forms I want and that at the end it will come together. I also like that I can put in figures to see what the outcome would be and then change back to the "real" figures. For several years I checked almost every form for accuracy and now I feel that I can trust the program to do my taxes better than I could do them myself!
What's great about it: Takes care of all the forms needed
What's not so great: Charging too much for state e-file

Though I was able to go through the different sections to populate all my information, there was a few times that I thought I would not get a return. But when I was reviewing one more time, I realized I fogot to take the sales tax credit, which made the difference between owning and receiving. For a second, I did not feel like Turbo Tax would have found that error (which was my fault for not completing that section).
I am glad I did not go all the way through to find if it would. I would hope that TurboTax would find an error like that.
What's great about it: TurboTax allowed me to take some credits that I forgot that I had

Saves Time!

Even though my degree is in accounting, filling out tax forms manually is a nightmare compared to using turbo tax. Yes - it can be done, but my time is more valuable. Plus turbo tax doesn't make simple errors! Turbo tax checks for errors, and let's you know about them.
It was so tedious writing in all the same data on every form - using Turbo Tax with importing means I don't have to re-enter the same data over and over again. It means I don't have to look up the addresses of charities yet again. And their partnership with ItsDeductible means I don't have to come up with a reasonable figure - it does it for me!
Simply put - using Turbo Tax turns a four plus hour task into a little over an hour. It saves me three hours - and for the cost, it is well worth it!
What's great about it: Quickness, link to itsdeductible, importing in prior years, comparisons to prior years
What's not so great: needing to pay for e-file state when I buy the state edition
